The myriad of Four-something vocal quartets in the '50s tend to get lumped together even though many of them had very distinct styles. From the microtonal complexity of the Four Freshmen to the collegiate humor of the Four Preps, they were as individual as any other groups around. In the case of the Four Lads, it's a little harder to pinpoint their sound because it changed throughout the course of their career. They started out strongly influenced by the black jubilee gospel quartets, recorded a series of popular novelty records under the auspices of Mitch Miller, then settled into interpreting pop standards and adult ballads in their rich, unadorned style. The Four Lads were probably closest in sound to the Ames Brothers by the end of the '50s, but their Canadian heritage and unique influences gave them a subtly distinct character. Big things do indeed come in small packages and Freda Rente' has the voice to prove it. Freda's talents have been strengthened over the years as a result of performing and collaborating with other bands. After a featured vocal spot on the "fIREHOSE" Columbia Records album "Mr. Machinery Operator;" "The ZARKONS" Atlantic Records album, "Between The Idea and Reality Falls The Shadow;" and recording with a number of others, Freda has decided to go solo. In the early 80's, Freda formed the band "VICIOUS ATTACK," played the rock scene, and decided that "no groove was old news". Two years later, Freda wrote new songs with a new sound. Catie Curtis has hit two extremes on Long Night Moon: several tracks explore her feelings as the new mother of two adopted little girls, while one of the songs, "People Look Around," deals with politics and social issues on a nearly global scale. Not surprisingly, that track is the biggest and most anthemic one on the album, and also the least effective -- even as it gets your dander up and makes you feel like part of a right-thinking community, it tacitly reminds you that songs have much more power to make people feel good about themselves that they do to change the world.
