This two-fer from '70s Native American Cajun-soul-rock outfit Redbone features their second and third albums Potlatch and Message from a Drum in their entireties, as well a couple of singles for good measure. Fans just looking for a copy of the band's hit single "Come and Get Your Love," or under-the-radar hits like "Maggie," the "Witch Queen of New Orleans" should pick up Epic/Legacy's Essential Redbone, while those looking to dig a little deeper into the group will find all that here and more. ~ James Christopher Monger
Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont.
Liner Note Author: Mark Marymont.
Redbone: Pat Vegas (vocals, bass); Anthony Bellamy, Lolly Vegas (guitar); Pete DePoe (drums).

| Golden Classics Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Two Great Redbone Albums Released On One CD!! This is a great sounding CD that contains two of their best albums in original running order. The albums Potlach and Message from a Drum are here in this set along with two extra cuts from the Wovoka Album! To date they are the only releases available of complete Redbone Albums. IF you are looking for classic Redbone Albums this is your best bet! The packaging is is a bit misleading as one might believe this is a greatest hits package and music from just two albums falls short of a good compilation. Redbone, Not what expected I ordered this album for my husband for our anniversary. We loved Redbone on 8 track and I was hoping this would be it, but it is not and we were disappointed. Submitted by a reviewer (jdanilow2001@yahoo.com) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great music from an original Seventies band Golden Classics is made up of Redbone*s 2nd. and 3rd. albums - "Potlatch" & "Message From A Drum" respectively, originally released 1970- 1971. The songs on this collection are presented in chronological order and two bonus tracks from fifth album "Wovoka" have beeen added as well. Featuring the original line-up of the band, Lolly Vegas (Leslie guitar and vocals), brother Pat Vegas (bass and vocals), Tony Bellamy (wah-wah guitar and vocals) & Pete Depoe (drums), Redbone takes us on a musical trip covering styles like soul, rhythm & blues, swamp-rock (cajun), straight pop music, folk ("Alcatraz") and regular jamming like the instrumental "Without Reservation." Obviously with their Native American background, some ceremonial drumming was provided by Pete DePoe, as on "Chant: 13th. Hour."
The blending of the different guitar sounds of Lolly Vegas and Tony Bellamy, DePoe's effective percussion, and Pat Vegas' thundering bass lines make for a ricly varied musical experience. Then you've got the contrasting lead vocals between the light, slighty nasal tenor of Lolly Vegas and the deep growl of Pat Vegas.
The sound is good, as you will probably notice halfway through the album on tracks #11 - 21 (all from "Message From A Drum"). If you want to add some Redbone CDs to your record collection, this is a good place to start.
Now couldn't somebody persuade Sony Music to release their debut album ( originally a double LP) as well as their 4th. album "Already Here" in the CD configuration. It's about time. Submitted by a reviewer (Hvidovre, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

happy with this CD.

$10.59 Anyone expecting a CD of tracks sounding like "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)," this band's number one national hit, will be sorely disappointed by the other 13 songs on Golden Classics. On the other hand, the rest of the stuff rocks so hard and enjoyably that it may pleasantly surprise those fans of the song. "Jenny-Lynne," which opens the collection, is representative of the group's real sound, a hard-rocking piece of good-time music, like a high-energy Creedence Clearwater Revival cut, without a horn section in sight. One can easily understand ...

$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band ...
