2 LPs on 1 CD: TODAY (1964)/RAMBLIN (1963). This is an odd reissue, compiling one of the Christys' weaker LPs with their strongest individual album on one CD. Today did double duty as an official group album and the soundtrack to the film Advance to the Rear, and it has a quartet of good, rousing songs typical of the Christys in a boisterous mood ("This Ol' Riverboat," "Whistlin' Dixie," "Way Down in Arkansas," "Charleston Town") and one achingly beautiful ballad ("Anything Love Can Buy"), as well as the hit title track. Unfortunately, those songs are interspersed with marches, dances, and other incidental music from the movie that doesn't work outside of that context. Ramblin', by contrast, holds up extremely well and, along with the original Christys' debut LP, represents their best studio work, mixing blues influences, 19 century popular songs, adaptations of traditional material ("Wagoner's Song"), and group originals (including "Green, Green"), all within the framework of the group's preferred big-band folk style. The Collectables CD reissue marks the second appearance for the Rambin' album, and it is a far brighter, cleaner, richer remastering than the late '80s Columbia version of the same material. Its value is further augmented by the addition of two bonus tracks, "This Land Is Your Land" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee," which were chart hits for the group before and after the release of these two albums. Overall, the CD is a great showcase for Barry McGuire, Nick Woods, and Art Podell, which makes this a good addition to the Collectors' Choice Live From Ledbetters CD, although that same label's double-CD anthology is still preferable. ~ Bruce Eder New Christy Minstrels Today/Ramblin' Songs Today/Ramblin' Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Some surprises I purchased this CD as an avid, die-hard New Christy Minstrels fan (early years' material), and of the two old albums in this combo, I was generally familiar with the music on their "Ramblin'" release. "5 Stars" to that line-up of music right there. However, I want to highlight the great instrumentals that are interspersed among the vocals on the "Today" album- some very creative, some just silly, but all are special treats. I heard "Today" as essentially an instrumental on track 3 and just said, "Wow!" I am less enthusiastic about the choices for the bonus tracks. After a quiet, thoughtful eloquent "Last Farewell" fades as the close to the "Ramblin'" album, the Mary Poppins middle-of-the-road Minstrels come on with "Chim Chiminey" and break the mood of that last song. From there, you can only go up, so having the over-exposed "This Land is Your Land" as the finale is OK, and its certainly vintage NCM. Submitted by Rick (Inverness, FL) Was This Review Helpful? New Christy Their music is great. The combination of two albums in one is convient 'specially since this originated back in the days when records only had 10 to 12 songs. Submitted by a reviewer (Atlanta, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
No info on who wrote each song I like the music on this CD, and the detailed information it provides on the history of the New Christy Minstrels, but I am surprised and disappointed that, unlike most other CDs, this one does not give any information on who wrote each song on it. What memories... I can remember listening to these songs a long, long, long time ago. They brought back good memories for me and I really like the harmony - not something you always hear today! Submitted by Diana (Covina, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$16.39 Here is a review written by Banning Eyre for www.afropop.orgPublished Feb. 2008 athttp://www.afropop.org/explore/album_review/ID/3433/New York City is home to a rich community of splendid musicians from West Africa’s old Mande Empire—Mali, Guinea, Gambia and beyond. Griot vocalist and balafon player extraordinaire, Famoro Dioubate is the latest star talent to emerge from the New York Mande milieu. The balafon (wooden xylophone) goes back to the touchstone period of Mande history, the rise of Sunjata Keita in 1235. The instrument seized from Sunjata’s Susu nemesis went on to acquire iconic status. To this day in Famoro’s native Guinea, Mande balafon features prominently in traditional and modern music alike. That history also weaves through the eleven tracks on this CD, even as Famoro intersperses memories of his childhood village (“Kakande”) and praise for old friends (“Bouba Sylla”) and new (“Nina Kaba” a young girl in Michigan). So while the music here takes liberties in keeping with the band’s international makeup, the underlying music and themes are classic griot fare—an intertwining of the past and the present with an eye to charting the good road in life. Kakande takes a unique approach to Mande music—acoustic, kinetic, textured and grooving. Dioubate’s virtuosic balafon riffing is rightly front and center, backed harmonically by a sweet blend of electric guitar (Mamady Kouyate), cello (Raoul Rothblatt), flute (Sylvain Leroux) and sax (Avram Fefer). These players step out occasionally, but mostly hang with the crisp rhythm section, creating textures that work as well in a dark, roiling jam like “Paya Paya,” as on a slow, mellifluous praise song like “Mariama Traoré.” Kakande bassist Peter Fand—a veteran of numerous Mande music projects—produced the album, skillfully balancing these elements to create a unified sound that keeps Famoro in the spotlight. “Dununya” opens with cello and flute ...
