Once "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" began climbing up the charts, Gale Garnett had to record her debut album, My Kind of Folk Songs, quite quickly. Considering the pressure on Garnett to deliver a full album, the record works very well, and that shouldn't be too surprising, because the bulk of the record features versions of folk songs that are arranged like her hit. That's not a bad thing at all, because her voice and the arrangements are sweet and alluring. Garnett's original songs are a little uneven, but they have nice, memorable melodies, and they help elevate the record into a truly enjoyable experience. Collectables' 1998 reissue contains five bonus tracks: "Lovin' Place," "St. James Infirmary," "God Bless the Child," "Excuse Me Mister," and "We'll Sing in the Sunshine." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING THIS COLLECTION IS A HODGE-PODGE OF LITTLE-KNOWN FOLK SONGS, AND A RE-RECORDING OF "WE'LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE" THAT IS FAR LESS THAN THE ORIGINAL. i CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS COLLECTION. Submitted by a reviewer (LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A TRUE CLASSIC INITSELF I was given this album when I was 11 years old. I cherished it with my life. WHen I was 15 my father went through a nasty divorce and his 2nd wife knowing how much that album meant to me demanded that and my very first car a ford thunderbird because at that time I was too young to have the car registered in my name. Needless to say she got them both.
I use to listen to that song every day, I was able to get into the music and realize tha pain that this singer sings of and her happiness with flying or escaping.
I used to sit by the stereo and play those songs daily all night long until I either cried myself to sleep or the hurt went away as it says in one of her songs.
Then at one point I told my brother and dad I would pay $500 to find the original album. One day my dad and brother took me to an old record store in Long Beach and we found it for $3.89.
Well now i am 44 and we no longer have a "record player in the house" SO I am ordering the C.D.
Thanks for taking the hurt away and bringing me back some old fashioned happiness. Submitted by Lamarste62 (San Diego, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A true 'Old Friend' I was given this album when I was 14 years old by my good friend, Mary, along with "Knights in White Satin' by the Moody Blues.I'm almost 53 now. It's been a long time since I have had access to this collection of simple but profound 'poetry', that spoke so loudly to me using so few words. When I heard it again I sang along without missing a one. I had listened to it so much it had become etched permanently into my mind by the singer whose voice carried the message directly into the hearts of those who would listen. The message was given in the first person, from those who were suffering, their story, rather than someone elses oppinion or perspective. I suffered in my upbringing. After hearing those songs I knew others experienced pain and suffering as well. These songs may go over the heads of some, or perhaps not live up to what they expected. They have, though, impressed many in the same way, in ways that perhaps can't be expressed, but can only be appreciated and understood by hearing them from a certain place, a difficult place, a hard place. $10.09 LO QUE TE CONTE MIENTRAS TE HACIAS LA DORMIDA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
Although at first listen La Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that had brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended to Be Asleep) merits closer attention. Beyond some similarities to their earlier work -- nostalgic lyrics, ridiculously catchy choruses, and lead singer Amaia Montero's seemingly fragile delivery -- this album displays far greater emotional and musical range than do their ...
