The Easy Riders' first two long-players assembled on one CD makes for a handy introduction to this unfairly overlooked folk trio -- it was a long way from this kind of pre-Kingston Trio folk ensemble to Bob Dylan, but it had to start somewhere, and it started with the Easy Riders. The material, a mix of folk, calypso, western, and sea shanties, with an uncommonly pretty blues ("So True Blues") somewhere in the middle for flavor, doesn't contain any surprises, except, perhaps, for the title ("Send for De Captain") on the trio's particular version of "Sloop John B," and the pleasantly upbeat rendition of "I Ride an Old Paint" -- the singing is pleasantly restrained, except where Terry Gilkyson opts to pull out the stops, his sweet tenor voice rising above the rest. The 12 tracks off of Wanderin': Folk Songs by the Easy Riders, which are weighted somewhat more toward blues (especially "Lonesome Whistle") and away from calypso, are in stereo, while the Marianne LP material is in mono -- the latter song is included, of course, but the group's one other (albeit minor) chart entry, "Tina," isn't present. The notes by Mark Marymount slight Richard Dehr's and Frank Miller's contributions to the trio somewhat, and also fail to expand on the superb instrumental work by the trio and their studio back-up musicians. ~ Bruce Eder

Roberta Flack was blessed with one of the loveliest, most soothing voices in the music industry. In the 1970s, she not only appealed to pop and R&B audiences, but also fit in with the era's more serious, sensitive singer/songwriters. She scored some of the decade's biggest hits with classics such as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," "Killing Me Softly with His Song," and "Feel Like Making Love," as well as her legendary duets with Donny Hathaway, all which have gone on to become standards in the pop pantheon. This single-disc set attempts to collect her best and most successful recordings from the 1970s to the 1990s, when she enjoyed the success of another Top Ten hit with Diane Warren's "Set the Night to Music" (with Maxi Priest). However, this ambitious collection, even with such stellar material, proves a little frustrating due to the omission of several key tracks from Flack's catalog, among those "Jesse," "If I Ever See You Again," "You've Got a Friend," and several others. It does, however, manage to incorporate other Flack collectibles, including her soundtrack hit "Making Love," her hit with Peabo Bryson, "Tonight I Celebrate My Love," her lovely, breezy, chart-topping 1988 R&B hit "Oasis," and a sleek 1990s house track, "Uh-Uh Ooh-Ooh Look Out ...

Simply calling Canadian expat Colin Linden a roots artist is technically true, but, like pigeonholing Emmylou Harris as just another country singer, sells his substantial talents short. The singer/songwriter and guitarist is well known in his home country through a steady stream of solo projects (this is his tenth not counting a compilation) since 1987, as a prolific sideman and producer and for his occasional work as one third of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings, but less so in the States, where he resided in 2009 when this album was released. Like the music of the Band, a group that has strongly influenced his sound, this is a diverse affair. Linden's expressive and homespun voice is also eerily similar to a combination of the Band's Richard Manuel and Rick Danko. Those familiar with Linden's previous discs will find this a more subdued but no less moving set. It's dedicated to his late longtime friend and accompanist, keyboardist Richard Bell, who also co-wrote one of the songs. From the acoustic country-folk of the opening title track to the retro, Presley-styled bluesy swagger of "Trouble Only Comes in 3's" and the '60s slow prom dance of "John Lennon in New Orleans," Linden shifts his approach but maintains a grounded, earthy vibe that glides from hypnotic to entrancing.
