In 1999, Collectables released Rockin'/Hell Bent for Leather!, which contained two complete albums -- Rockin' (1957, originally released on Columbia) and Hell Bent for Leather! (1961, originally released on Columbia) -- by Frankie Laine on one compact disc. ~ Jason Birchmeier In the late 1950s the music industry was sweeping away the old styles of music to accommodate the growing trend towards pop and rock & roll. Few of the older generation of singers managed to survive. Frankie Laine, however, was finding his star on the ascent with a sound quite different from his beginnings in the 1930s. His manly voice, always youthfully dynamic, has a dash and rhythm that rocks and rolls. As much and as easily as Laine reflected the new sounds of the '50s and '60s, ROCKIN' is really a selection of pre-rock tunes, vibrantly delivered with updated panache. Laine's rousing rendition of "Sunny Side of the Street" certainly makes this standard jump. HELL BENT FOR LEATHER showcases Laine capitalizing on rock's Nashville roots with his Elvis Presley-like stylings of C&W themed pop songs. "Rawhide," with its Western rhythm, is lassoed by Laine's dramatic vocal banditry. Rockin'/Hell Bent For Leather
$21.19 Frankie Laine became a major figure in Western-related pop music almost by accident -- had Tex Ritter's own record label, Capitol Records, moved a little faster to get "High Noon" released in connection with the movie of that name, Ritter (who did have a country hit with it) would have almost certainly crossed over to pop success as well. As it was, they hesitated, and Laine cut the song for Columbia in the meantime. Then Capitol rushed out and subsequently pulled back a version by Ritter that didn't have the ominous drumbeat, while Columbia's version -- with the drumbeat -- got out there, and the result was a career-redefining hit for Frankie Laine. And across the next decade, Laine would periodically record Western songs, either as commercial releases or in connection with ...

The single most influential album of Western songs in post-World War II American music, Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs touched a whole range of unexpected bases in its own time and has endured extraordinarily well across the ensuing four decades. The longevity of the album's appeal is a result of Marty Robbins' love of the repertory at hand and the mix of his youthful dynamism and prodigious talent that he brought to the recordings, and the use of the best music production techniques of the era. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The late Israel Kamakawio'ole, known to his many fans simply as Iz, was a consummate Hawaiian with a wonderful voice and accomplished ukulele technique. This posthumous release of some unplugged performances, enhanced arrangements, and previously unreleased songs is definitely for his legion of admirers.
