Originally issued on vinyl and cassette, the Spinners' Live is much better on CD. The original was a foldout double-sleeve job with two vinyl disks. The worst tune, their campy rendition of George and Ira Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm," is track one. Maybe in person they spiced it with fancy choreography, but without any visuals, it's just blah. For some strange reason they omitted "I'll Be Around," which would have been a far superior opening track than the Gershwins' dinosaur. The excitement unfolds with "I've Got to Make It on My Own" from their latest studio album (at that point), New and Improved. They perform it with the ferocity of a new single; it wasn't, but the inspiring song should have been. Then comes siesta time again via Thom Bell and Linda Creed's unusual tempo "Living Just a Little, Laughing Just a Little"; the best way to look at that death march is to view it as the quiet before the storm of chartbusters, including "Then Came You," a theatrical "Sadie," and the swaying "How Could I Let You Get Away" (featuring imitations of Al Green, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding). They bust into "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," then traipse into a longer medley imitating everybody from Tom Jones to the Marvelettes. Philippe Wynne literally cries the lyrics in the icy rendition of "Love Don't Love Nobody" that follows, before the disk spins out with the energetic "Mighty Love." Live is a good, if not great, live album where the highs make up for the lows, but Wynne's performance makes it essential. It sold well, and fans began awaiting Live, Vol. 2 -- unfortunately, they still are. Despite good sales and more hits, the Spinners never did another live one. ~ Andrew Hamilton

Thoroughly enjoying the Spinners Live cd...heard the album about 10 years ago an have been looking for it ever since. The great little touches to a live album that don't appear in the original recording are wonderful...makes you feel like you are right at the show !

Backstreet Boys Millenium CD  (1999)

Live! album
CD $8.99  4.2 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
MILLENNIUM was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and for Best Pop Vocal Album. "I Want It That Way" was nominated for Record Of The Year and for Song Of The Year. "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The Backstreet Boys self-titled 1997 debut album endeared the group to millions of teens and pre-teens with its radio-friendly blend of pop harmonies and danceable beats. MILLENNIUM finds the Boys in the unenviable position of following up the mind-blowing success of the first album. Less ambitious artists might wither under such pressure, but the Backstreet Boys beat the dreaded sophomore slump in style. In the tradition of the debut, the album is a combination of romantic ballads guaranteed to make your little sister sob, and syncopated, eminently danceable, upbeat tunes. Throughout, it's the rich combination of the members' voices that creates the distinctive sound the group's legion of fans has grown to love. Most notably though, there is an added maturity in both the songs and the performances. It seems, regardless of their fans' fervent wishes, that even Backstreet Boys can't help but grow up. Additional personnel includes: Chieli Minucci (acoustic ...

This twofer brings together a pair of Spinners' albums--1976's HAPPINESS IS BEING WITH THE SPINNERS and 1977's 8. By the late '70s the Spinners had enjoyed a fair degree of success: their take on the smooth Philly Soul sound had earned them a sizable following. Neither HAPPINESS nor 8 are standout discs, but taken together they serve up enough tasty moments to make the twofer a worthwhile purchase. The funky "Rubberband Man," for example, is a standout cut: a dancefloor favorite that rides a serious groove while lead vocalist Phillippe Wynne does his thing. Opener "Now That ...

CD $10.69  5 stars Audio Samples
Only three singles sprang from the release of From Here to Eternally (1979) and Love Trippin' (1980) combined, so this two-fer is hardly a musical powerball. It's not remotely close to their early-'70s LPs, with the unpredictable Philippe Wynne leading the charge and producer Thom Bell in a zone. Wynne's gone; his replacement, John Edwards, a seasoned soul singer, does an admirable job. "Cupid"/"I Loved You For a Long Time" was the Spinners' last significant hit before becoming pop Top 40 nonfactors. A second single, "Now That You're Mine Again," went unnoticed, and the third, "I Just Want to Fall in Love," gets more plays via Internet Real Audio and Window Media than it did when Atlantic Records released it. Bell relies on Bobbie Smith's light tenor and Henry Fambrough's pleasant but colorless tenor for too many leads; after too many doses of them you welcome Edwards' biting, expressive full-bodied vocals with open ears. Other than the previously mentioned singles and "Streetwise," "Love Trippin'," and "Split Decision" (on which Pervis Jackson's bass is unleashed), there's nothing else among the 18 tracks you'll want to hear twice. ~ Andrew Hamilton Only three singles sprang from the release of From Here to Eternally (1979) and Love Trippin' (1980) combined. Faith Hill won the 2000 CMA Award for Female Vocalist Of The Year. BREATHE won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Breathe" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. "Let's Make Love" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. "Breathe" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Best Country Song and Song Of The Year. "The Way You Love Me" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. With her third album, FAITH, Faith Hill tasted pop crossover success--and she evidently liked the taste. BREATHE, Hill's fourth release, takes the pop/country stylings of FAITH to the next level. It's an appealing collection of pop, gospel, R&B, rock, and ballads, with just a bit of country thrown in. The production, featuring Hill's big voice surrounded by booming drums and screaming guitars, is so slick you could skate on it. Love is the subject of nearly every song, from the exuberant "I Got My Baby," to the soulful "Love Is a Sweet Thing," to the cutesy "The Way You Love Me," with its Beatlesque backing vocals. But while Hill can obviously handle a wide range of material, she sounds best on the quieter, country-flavored numbers, like the title track, the lovely "It Will Be Me," and a haunting, vaguely Latin-flavored reworking of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind." The most emotional track is "Let's Make Love," a full-fledged ...

Those who aren't familiar with the work of seminal 1980s band The Talking Heads may find themselves becoming instant fans after viewing this incredibly entertaining concert film. It starts with David Byrne stepping out alone on empty stage with an acoustic guitar to sing "Psycho Killer." The rest of the musicians follow one by one and the stage gradually fills to bursting with powerful, tightly orchestrated brilliance. Director Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, PHILADEPLPHIA) expertly captures the music's energy, fusing cinema with performance to create something more than the sum of its parts. Through it all, Byrne comes off as a charismatic artist of supernatural energy and robotic precision, and he's backed by an equally inspired ...

Noted hip-hop producer Ant Banks, known for rocking beats for numerous Northern California MC's, has put together a stellar compilation album featuring his own productions with guest appearances from some of the hottest MC's around. "Pervin," a humorous, laid-back head-nodder that features Too Short and E-40, is one of the albums highlights, simply on the strength of the lyrical interplay. "Gotta Have Heart" finds Metro laying it down over a hard-pounding, bass-heavy track. Some of the other cuts that stand out are "Cross Me Up," where Keek The Sneak dodges the player haters and shady cats that are always on the scene, "Players Holiday," and "Shook Niggas," a mad posse ...

Collectables' somewhat generically titled Soul Classics series actually focuses on the romantic side of style, gathering soulful love songs from the '70s. Soul Classics, Vol. 1 features the Isley Brothers' "For the Love of You," the Intruders' "I Wanna Know Your Name," and David Ruffin's "Statue of a Fool" among the highlights of its eight selections. Though each of the album's cuts, which include work by Phyllis Hyman, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the O'Jays, is solid, the collection's overall length is too short ...
