| | Lee Burridge Global Underground: Nubreed CDs (2001)
Pillow Talk music CDs
$24.05 This entry into the ongoing Global Underground series represents perhaps the most eclectic mix to date, as Lee Burridge manages to teeter somewhere between straight-ahead mid-tempo house rhythms and dynamic breaks. And he doesn't just follow house records with breaks, but rather spins tracks that feature both styles of beats interwoven within the rhythms. So, given this untraditional approach, Burridge presents a set that's, at the least, always interesting. You're never quite sure where he's headed -- sometimes moving away from breaks towards a more grounded, 4/4 rhythm, other times doing quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ubiquitous progressive sound that has so long been a staple of the Global Underground series is, for the most part, absent here. Yet as unique as this album is within the context of the other Global Underground albums, it's not without flaws. In particular, the first set often drags, with its somewhat plodding tempo and lack of progressive elements. Sure, some DJs can get away with playing progressive tracks for five or more minutes, given the ever-evolving nature of that style. But Burridge's records aren't usually progressive and often get monotonous after a few minutes, making you wish he would either mix into the next track sooner or spin records that have a greater sense of development. The second set more than compensates though, as Burridge goes with a more dynamic selection of tracks that is heavier on breaks than the first. You get the feeling that this is where Burridge ...
| | Ludacris Word Of Mouf CD (2001) Edited
Pillow Talk songs
$12.65 WORD OF MOUF was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album.
"Rollout (My Business)" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance.
For this Atlanta-based rapper, keeping true to street roots has never been a concern, since he's always remained so close to them. Far from the east and west coast hip-hop star mills, this southern sensation rose up from the underground and never abandoned what he'd learned there. His third album WORD OF MOUF may find Ludacris surrounded by a brace of guests that include both heavy hitters (Mystikal, Jagged Edge, Nate Dogg) and more unknown names (Sleepy Brown, Keon Bryce, Fate Wilson), but he draws on his own considerable verbal skills and unique urban vision as the foundations for his work.
Ludacris' second album for Def Jam, Word of Mouf, is a superstar affair that aims for mass appeal with a broad array of different styles. Nearly every track features some sort of collaborator, either hitmaking producers like Timbaland and Organized Noize, big-name rappers like Mystikal and Twista, hook-singing crooners like Nate Dogg and Jagged Edge, or fellow Disturbing tha Peace group members I-20, Shawnna, Lil' Fate, and Tity Boi -- and sometimes a combinations of these various ingredients. The resulting album is surely impressive, propelled by lively production, colorful guests, and an omnipresent touch of humor. More hilarious than before, Ludacris lightens his lyrical style here, leaving behind ...
| | Death Cab For Cutie Stability EP CD (2002) Extended Play
Pillow Talk album
$7.09 Death Cab brought forth this EP to coincide with a tour with Dismemberment Plan (dubbed, with great wit, "The Death and Dismemberment Tour"). Since the Seattle foursome's EP just prior to the album, Photobooth, was just as fantastic, there was every reason to anticipate this one too with licked chops. So it's a curt shock to find this one so incredibly without worth. Even without comparing it to a song of the timeless caliber of "Photobooth," the A-side here, "20th Century Towers," is a meandering piece of pointless scribble. It's as offhand a throwaway as one could imagine, from a group whose mixture of bright but brooding guitar textures and Ben Gibbard's stunningly detailed lyrics has been so distinctive and strong. Nothing happens, nothing moves for a glum and dull four-and-a-half-minutes, like a frowning Little League kid staring out a window at gameday rain. The promise of the piano-tussled "Stability" also fades into tedium by hovering uninvited for 12 minutes. There is no earthly reason its spare sweet melody and spinning riff needed to last longer than two minutes; thereafter, like a bunch of bad pork attached ...
| | Lionel Richie Can't Slow Down CDs (1983) Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Pillow Talk CD music
$20.89 Mr Richie's brand of silky-smooth macho soul was the butt of some critics during the early 80s. A plethora of handsome studs with great voices, whopping great medallions, who just wanted to lurve all night long followed Richie. Yet another album crammed with hit singles, it was one of the 80s sales phenomena both in the USA and the UK - as was "Hello." Corny but delicious, and unashamedly romantic, and consequently, more couples have danced to his "All Night Long (All Night)" than any other - and then 16 million couples went out and bought it.
On Can't Slow Down, his second solo album, Lionel Richie ran with the sound and success of his eponymous debut, creating an album that was designed to be bigger and better. It's entirely possible that he took a cue from Michael Jackson's Thriller, which set out to win over listeners of every corner of the mainstream pop audience, because Richie does a s

Pillow Talk CD music
$17.15 The full title of this album is "Van Der Graaf Generator - The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other."
All songs written by Peter Hammill, except "Out Of My Book" (Hammill/Jackson).
Peter Hammill has always had an abiding interest, it seems, in the blurred boundary between the mystical and the scientific, and between the rational and magical mind; this is certainly evident on the debut Van Der Graaf Generator album, even though Hammill had yet to really begin focusing himself on what it was that was driving him (despite the fact that the band's very name referenced a device that ...
