This album is a pleasant if unchallenging up-tempo pop/rock vehicle, built around the Top 20 hit title track. Rambeau sounds like another Tommy Roe or Gary Lewis, although he does surprisingly well on "It's Not Unusual" and "Save the Last Dance for Me" -- no one will forget Tom Jones or the Drifters, respectively, but they aren't bad enough to switch past, either. Nothing here was exactly cutting edge, even from the ranks of pop/rock crooners of the period, though Rambeau has some pleasing originals interspersed with the cover versions, including "Don't Believe Him." The Collectables Records CD reissue from the spring of 2000 offers good sound and some reasonably informative if loosely structured sleeve notes. ~ Bruce Eder

Concrete And Clay album
$12.95 For their second album, Sonny and Cher largely dropped both the overt Spectorisms and derivative folk-rock of their debut, 1965's LOOK AT US, instead refining the two into an utterly unique blend. There were few protest songs as dazzlingly-arranged as "Laugh At Me," originally released as a Sonny solo single. The follow-up "The Revolution ...
| | Sonny & Cher Look At Us CD (1998)
Concrete And Clay CD music
$12.95 Sonny and Cher had released a handful of previous singles, under both their own names and the pseudonyms Caesar and Cleo, but this is their full length debut album, a curious mix of folk-rock jangle and Spector-influenced orchestral pop. Sonny Bono worked under Spector as a go-fer, session musician and staff songwriter, and his admiration for the producer's patented Wall of Sound verges on slavish imitation in spots. ...
| | Deep Six CD (1966) (Import) United Kingdom
Concrete And Clay music CDs
$16.15 Imagine the Mamas & the Papas without the arranging prowess of John Phillips or the powerful voice of Cass Elliot and you get a pretty good idea of what the Deep Six sounded like. During their brief existence, they released one self-titled LP in 1966 on Liberty. Over three decades later, the U.K.-based Rev Ola label not only reissued that rare collector's item, but also included five non-LP cuts, rare photos, and excellent liner notes. The light, if somewhat generic, folk-rock arrangements ...
| | Association Live CD (1970)
Concrete And Clay songs
$13.59 This 75-minute album, originally a double-LP (recorded live at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1970) is a valiant attempt at capturing the Association's concert sound on record. Unfortunately, it fails for several reasons, beginning with the fact that the instrumental mix is very bass-heavy -- even with adjustments to compensate, this overwhelms much of the rest of the band on several key numbers. Additionally, the group's singing, though more than adequate, lacks the presence needed to give their harmonies the necessary radiance to make the music fully attractive, coming off instead as anemic. The real problem is that cutting a live album was a thankless task for this group -- so much of their sound was dependent on a studio-driven perfection -- that live recording was an exercise in futility (let's put it this way -- the Beach Boys pulled this off more than once, but they had a resident genius around part of the time doing ...
| | Strangeloves In The Night Time CD (2003)
Concrete And Clay album
$6.45 This mid-line disc consists of half the material available on the definitive Strangeloves compilation, 1995's I Want Candy: The Best of the Strangeloves. However, parties looking for a concise package should note 2003's In the Night Time, which offers the Top 40 entries "Cara-Lin," "I Want Candy," and "Night Time" in addition to sides from their sole 1965 long-player and several single-only tracks from 1966 and 1967. In a practically Spinal Tap-ian mythology, they were promoted as (get this) wealthy Australian sheepherders whose infatuation with rock & roll had driven them to abandon their flocks and set out to create the sounds they loved. In typical American-made hype and true to form, the public decided to scream now and ask questions later. The reality of the Strangeloves is nowhere near as alluring. Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard ...
| | Merrilee Rush Angel Of The Morning CD (2006)
Concrete And Clay CD music
$13.59 Although a classically trained pianist, Merrilee Rush's greatest exposure came in the form of 1968's Angel of the Morning. Previously, she had been in several American Northwest R&B combos in the early to mid-'60s -- including the Aztecs, Merrilee & Her Men, and a stint with Tiny Tony & the Statics. By 1965, Rush settled into her own band, Merrilee & the Turnabouts, which quickly became local teen dancehall favorites. Their success garnered them a spot supporting Paul Revere & the Raiders during their 1967 tour, resulting in head Raider Mark Lindsay introducing Rush to Memphis-based producer Chips Moman. While the Turnabouts are credited on the original album jacket, Moman replaced Rush's backing band ...
