The four albums Brother Jack McDuff released on Atlantic between 1966 and 1968 were in a more purely R&B vein than the soul-jazz the organist played on his earlier work for Prestige. While the Atlantic dates had an eye on success in pop markets, they still offer jazz-organ fans plenty of McDuff's agile, driving sound. This reissue pulls together two of the releases from 1967. The programs are a mix of blues, pop tunes, standards, and McDuff originals. Atlantic's bid to get McDuff airplay means, in the interest of brevity, that almost half the tracks fade out on the endings. Throughout, McDuff makes a point of keeping a healthy portion of soulful grit in whatever he plays (a cornball cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" being one instance where McDuff's grit goes out the window). Four of the Tobacco Road tracks have McDuff's arrangements for a five-piece horn section. The other five tracks feature McDuff's regular quartet from this period. The highlight is the definitive version of "Wade in the Water," a gospel standard also variously attributed to McDuff or to pianist Ramsey Lewis, both of whom had hits with it. The Do it Now! date has a little more room for stretching out. Again, the players are the organist's working band, which at the time included the fine guitarist Melvin Sparks, an R&B version of an earlier McDuff collaborator, Grant Green. ~ Jim Todd

Make a Move is Henry Threadgill's electric band in one sense of the word. Though guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist Stomu Takeishi play acoustic instruments as well, their primary focus in Make a Move is to make their stringed instruments scream unto the heavens. Filling out the group is Threadgill on alto and flute, Bryan Carrott on vibes and marimba, and the only holdover from Zoo-Id, Dafnis Prieto, on drums. This set is issued simultaneously with Zoo-Id's Up Popped Two Lips, also on Pi. This set opens abstractly enough with "Platinum Inside Straight," a meditation on extended mode and interval, with Brandon Ross playing a gorgeous acoustic line on top of Carrott's marimba and then delicately chorded vibes. Takeishi's bass holds the thing to the ground by playing a small series of tone frames over and over, and Threadgill grabs one short flute solo. Things heat up and get funky on "Don't Turn Around," which is driven by the funk in the rhythm section's approach. There's a knotty arpeggio here and there by Ross and Carrott before Threadgill turns "Harlem Nocturne" inside out ...

This collection of Billie Holiday recordings was issued on CD in 1981. It contains Holiday at the height of her powers when she was recording for Columbia in the late '30s and '40s. Bandography You’ve read the tabloids and seen every episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music,” and you think you’ve heard every story about every band to ever grace the stage…and then, there is Last Man Standing.Gary Kinder grows up in Middle America fascinated by the fact that the only songs his father ever sings are those of Elvis. So, at the age of five, Gary learns three chords on a dime store guitar and sings “That’s Alright mama, mama that’s alright” over and over until the whole neighborhood wants to use his guitar as firewood. He doesn’t care though, and continues to sing until he figures out that if you know more than one song, people will actually take their earplugs out. The love of music is the offspring, an ugly but lovable little creature. Fast forward to Albuquerque New Mexico, 1982 and Gary has transferred to the University of New Mexico in order to attempt to become a world class athlete in the sport of track and field. While Gary trains 6-8 hours every day in the track, throwing the shot put, high jumping and running hurdles, he begins to spend his nights writing songs and learning how to play the guitar. The songs are bad and the guitar playing worse but it continues to be a wonderful diversion from the pain and suffering that Gary inflicts upon himself in the daylight hours. Little does he know that at some point, not unlike the passion for the decathlon that had overwhelmed him, the need for music will overtake his being and lead him down paths that no human should ever go (Music Row). After a very successful athletic career that is capped by 10 national team selections and an Olympic Trials Championship, leading to a birth on the 1988 Olympic Team, Gary moves across the country once again to become the track coach at the University of Virginia.The musicitis that had infected him while in New Mexico resurfaces and before long he is writing late night songs and playing on the weekends at small clubs in the Shenandoah Mountains.
