Fifth Angel was one of the most dynamic live performers of the 1980's - their amazing live sets prompted Epic to sign the group in 1986. This original album stayed on the Billboard charts for thirteen weeks in 1988 and is filled with the powerful - yet melodic - rock that the group is known for, including In The Fallout, Cry Out The Fools, and Fade to Flames. 9 tracks.
This analogy may be a tad obscure for most people to grasp (but then again, maybe not if you've made it this far), but in terms of mid-'80s Seattle metal terms, one could say that Fifth Angel was the Saxon to Queensr˙che's Iron Maiden. It's a stretch, but, like Queensr˙che, Fifth Angel delved in classic metal deeply steeped in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal style. And, on this, their eponymous release (confusingly reissued by Epic almost two years later), the band boasted admirable technical chops while wheeling out solid metal anthems like "In the Fallout" (sounding like a Saxon outtake, but a good one at that), "Fifth Angel," and the majestic "Wings of Destiny." Unlike Queensr˙che, however, they never had a chance to develop their sound, despite showing a keen eye for the commercial metal conventions of the time (see their pretty outfits and well-sculpted hair). Still, for fans of American-made classic metal, this remains an important work worth seeking out. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Fifth Angel: Ted Pilot (vocals); Ed Archer, James Byrd (guitar); John Macko (bass); Ken Mary (drums).

| | Fifth Angel Time Will Tell CD (1989)
Fifth Angel CD music
$10.55 Fifth Angel's entire disappointing career can be summed up in two words: "lowered expectations." Rarely has group of such talented musicians so debased its individual abilities in the pursuit of commercial acceptance. Underneath the mundane arrangements, pedestrian chord voicings, and exaggeratedly glossy finish applied to their albums, particularly 1989's sophomore Time Will Tell, lies a highly accomplished heavy metal band desperate to break free of its record company (and self-imposed) shackles and actually risk something...anything! But they never did, and instead of emulating the highbrow metal approach of their successful Seattle brethren Queensr˙che (clearly their intention), Fifth Angel more often resembles L.A. also-rans Dokken -- and an often less impressive version of Dokken at that. Ouch! Even when they launch off aggressive staccato riffs and made-to-order pop-metal anthems like "Midnight Love," "Wait for Me," and the preposterously corny "We Rule," they infallibly collapse into clichéd moves and intolerably cheesy choruses. Even their faithful cover of UFO's classic "Lights Out" is sanitized beyond redemption, its fierce energy squandered by -- you guessed it -- lowered expectations. ...
| | Steelheart CD (1991)
Fifth Angel music CDs
$6.49 Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. "I'll Never Let You Go" is available on some quality collections and no aficionado of poodle pomp should let that song go, otherwise leave Steelheart in peace with the music it helped lay to rest. ~ Doug Stone
Possessing metal pipes like few before him, the leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go." Ludicrous and sublime, the sound is roughly akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." | | Vandenberg Alibi CD (1985)
Fifth Angel songs
$9.69 By the time Alibi rolled around, Vandenberg was fast losing steam and creative ideas (though the cover with the Alligator bursting out from underground near ancient temples is a refreshing ode to surrealism in a metal dominated field of leather and makeup). The group had fallen prey to the then-contemporary, overly produced, highly glossed sound that glam metal was to bring to the forefront of commercial hard rock, and failed miserably at conforming to the sound (and the label's) demands. There are moments where the band still show traces of their original promise, but those are few and far between. Shortly after this, group ...

| | State Property Presents The Chain Gang Vol. 2 CD (2003)
Fifth Angel songs
$10.39 "Can't Stop Won't Stop" was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
State Property, a collective built around troubled but talented Beanie Sigel, were first seen by most of the public in a 2002 movie (fittingly enough titled STATE PROPERTY) starring said head rapper as Beans, a young gangsta who decides to lead his crew on a rampaging takeover of his city. Led by Beanie, the group is bolstered by the talents of a slew of the best up-and-coming young rappers Roc-A-Fella records could bring into the fold. Including the electrifying breakout lyricist Freeway and the alluringly dulcet-toned duo Young Gunz, State Property offer up a take-no-prisoners firestorm of violent flow focused by a righteously angry intelligence and the aptest of references.
Switching off and combining their talent in multiple manners on CHAIN GANG VOL. 2, State Property presents a balanced attack of solid raps. Chris and Neef of Young Gunz start things up with their trademarked trading-off vocals on the ferocious "Can't Stop, Don't Stop." Roc-A-Fella CEO and prolific megastar Jay-Z (who played a rival gang leader in the movie) drops in with one of his strongest, twistiest turns on "It's On." ...
| | Rammstein Rosenrot CDs (2005) Import
Fifth Angel album
$45.09 When the Berlin Wall came tumbling down, and Communism along with it, little did the world know that the monolithic regime-metal of Rammstein had been growing up behind it, soon to release itself upon the world and remind the free what it's like to have to walk in line. Wagnerian in scope and mood (if not in sound), 2006's ROSENROT finds the East German group offering up more of their uber-dramatic club/industrial chug that's as cold and massive as the hulking battleship that graces its cover. Imagine the ghost of Austrian pop star Falco inhabiting a giant steel robot and going on a city-destroying rampage; that's what's at stake here, and there are more than enough tracks providing the sort of dancefloor totalitarianism that Goths and rivetheads crave. The big surprise on ROSENROT is the half of the album dominated by ballads, quietly creeping along like blackened ivy up a castle wall. The band's signature German-only lyrics are also subverted here with "Te Quiero P***!," adding Mexican horns and bending their lockstep rhythmic assault to a Latin-centric cadence; it's like a soundtrack ...

| | XYRA Where Glass Birds Fly CD (2000)
Fifth Angel music CDs
$15.19 "Xyra & Verborgen don't sound much like the other bands who play D.C.'s rock clubs - and that's not only because of Xyra Harper-Cann's classically trained voice. The local ensemble's "Where Glass Birds Fly" is rooted in Goth-punk and art-rock, notably the quieter side of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the more melodic songs of Nico . . . As titles like "Prometheus Scatters Ashes and "Ancient Incubus" signal, Harper-Cann doesn't exactly write kick-out-the-jams material. Such verses as "Onyx cigarette holder, in a white gloved hand/Like a Lautrec painting/Or a bright cabaret band" suit Harper-Cann's meticulous vocals and the band's style, which draws on chamber music and European cafe songs."Mark Jenkins - The Washington Post, The Weekend Section___ "They call their singular style "Cabaret Rock Nouveau," a fitting ...

| | Psychostick We Couldn't Think Of A Title CD (2006)
Fifth Angel album
$9.75 There's a checklist of things to do on the back of this CD -- "Record CD, Make Art, Eat Pizza, Beer!!, Think of album title." The last one's not checked off, and thus We Couldn't Think of a Title is the title, and a better one than any the band come up with on the opening track, "Indecision."
Meet Psychostick, a hardcore band who just can't take anything seriously, not even their debut album. There again, music is merely a means to an end, as the group proclaim on "In a Band to Get Chicks." Well, at least they're not in it for the money, or are they? Certainly "Fake My Own Death and Go Platinum" suggests otherwise. Apparently, Psychostick have never had a thought that they didn't turn into a song. The wash is piling up? They write a song called "I Hate Doing Laundry" about it. Their car's always breaking down? They give it a stiff talking to on "Two Ton Paperweight." An embarrassing itch in their nether regions? "Scrotal Torment" is the result. And then there's the always popular "Beer!" and "The Jagermeister Love Song." But for all the entertaining juvenile humor within, there's also an intelligence at work here, bitter twists of lyrical themes, and a sharp eye for a culture that needs its come-uppance. "Prozak Milkshake" is a quite brilliant example of the latter, where our heroes veer off into emo land and berate themselves nearly to suicide, before putting the blame precisely where it belongs, on their mother the bitch, then wander off to get some french fries. "Why Oh Why" delves into the emotional morass as well, a lovely, melodic love-lost song that takes a surprising twist towards the end. And Psychostick are the kings of the unexpected twist, be it the glorious opening of "Good Morning" that abruptly turns into a hardcore horror wake-up call, or the sweet, acoustic guitar that accompanies the self-explanatory themed "Orgasm = Love." ...
