LONELY STREET (1960), a collection of songs handpicked by Andy Williams, is his "wee small hours" record, designed to capture the melancholy mood of the moments between midnight and dawn. The result is rich music, perfect for creating a late-night atmosphere. This was Williams's first LP to hit the Billboard chart, no doubt powered by his astonishing readings of Don Raye and Gene De Paul's "You Don't Know What Love Is," Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and a strikingly minimal arrangement of "Unchained Melody."
Released the same year, THE VILLAGE OF ST. BERNADETTE is a gently religious record that is successful at hanging together thematically, but with songs and arrangements designed to appeal to a secular audience as well. Williams, whose voice is in characteristically incredible form, recorded these 11 tracks at New York City's Webster Hall in late 1959. The title track--written by a young English girl after visiting the famous shrine in Lourdes, France--became a chart hit.

Collectables Records' two-fer Andy Williams/Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein combines on one CD Andy Williams' first two LP releases, first issued by Cadence Records. Andy Williams was really a compilation that gathered together the A- and B-sides of all six of the singles Williams had released in 1956 and 1957. The A-sides of each of these singles reached the charts: the first, "Walk Hand in Hand," broke Williams into the charts in the spring of 1956; "Canadian Sunset" just missed hitting number one, establishing him as an important new star; "Baby Doll," the title song of a movie, made the Top 40; "Butterfly" was a chart-topper and Williams' biggest ever hit single; "I Like Your Kind of Love" made the Top Ten; and "Lips of Wine" made the Top 20. In its matching up of Andy Williams titles for a two-fer release, Collectables Records has opted to combine Williams' spring 1972 album Love Theme From "The Godfather" with his spring 1974 album The Way We Were, skipping over his fall 1972 album Alone Again (Naturally) and his fall 1973 album Solitaire. (Those two are together on another disc.) The theory may have been that these two both had something to do with the movies while the two in between did not, but in fact all of these albums take the same approach, more or less. That approach is to have Williams present his interpretations of songs from the pop charts of the period. This entry in Collectables' series of discount-priced two-fer reissues of Andy Williams' albums combines two successive releases originally issued in 1969 (Get Together With Andy Williams) and 1970 (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head). The compilers have sequenced the albums out of order, probably mistakenly, since the original catalog numbers would have suggested that Raindrops came first. The compilation would have worked better if the albums were presented in release order. Get Together was a typical Andy Williams album of the time, one on which he simply listened to what was on the radio in the spring of 1969 and picked out some tunes he liked -- Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, a couple of songs from the musical Hair that had become pop hits.
