Probably the greatest cabaret artist of them all, Mabel Mercer can take some getting used to. Her queenly diction and comic Margaret Dumont-like delivery can be off-putting to listeners brought up on jazz. Unlike her great contemporary Lee Wiley, Mercer is not that personal a singer, either. Like an old-school psychoanalyst, the emotion she expresses through her unparalleled mastery of lyrics is that of her audience reflected back to itself.
The 1955 Atlantic LP MIDNIGHT AT MABEL MERCER'S is representative of the set she performed nightly in various rooms in post-war New York throughout the late '40s and' 50s, where her fans included Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner as well as Atlantic producer Ahmet Ertegun. While the psychologically deeper MABEL MERCER SINGS COLE PORTER remains the essential Mercer album, MIDNIGHT has the more varied set list and includes such highlights as the Comden-Green-Bernstein classics "Lucky To be Me" and "Some Other Time." ONCE IN A BLUE MOON (1956) offers a somewhat more obscure set of tunes though it does boast Mercer's classic rendition of "The Twelve Days Of Christmas" as well as Noel Coward's "If Love Was All."

| Midnight At Mabel Mercer's/Once In A Blue Moon Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Great Cabaret Song with Great Arrangements This one's a great value: 2 CD's in one jewel case. Mabel Mercer is for lovers of all ages, who believe that life experience counts for something. There is nothing disposable, nothing flashy, nothing larger-than-real here. This is one quiet lady, sitting to sing, looking you in the eye because you're only a few feet away. I would invite young people to sample Mabel. She's a world away from all the glitz we all live in through TV and movies and huge rock shows with thousands of thousands in the crowd and video screens that show the band 90 feet tall. That whole fantasy world is a great escape. But you and I don't live there, all our dreams of stardom aside, and our lovers are not from the Hollywood A team. Mabel sings a real song about real love to real people who love other real people, we who hurt and laugh and cry and screw up. That's the world she sings to us about. And in these two discs we hear Mabel with a bit more than the usual solo piano accompaniments. Here we have two pianos and bass on one and a chamber orchestra on the other. Beautiful arrangements which make the songs special in a fresh instrumental way. Submitted by epmusic (Elberta, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Midnight At Mabel Mercer's/Once In A Blue Moon CD music
$13.19 Simon Dupree and the Big Sound were a U.K. psychedelic pop/R&B band, the core of which later performed progressive rock group Gentle Giant. This 56-track anthology includes mono and stereo versions of tracks from their album WITHOUT RESERVATION, plus 16 previously unreleased cuts.
This is an amazing CD reissue, three times over -- for psychedelic music buffs, British R&B and soul enthusiasts, and fans of the progressive rock band Gentle Giant (which evolved out of Simon Dupree & the Big Sound). And it's also incredibly long overdue. Best-known for their Oriental ersatz pop-psychedelic classic "Kites," Simon Dupree & the Big Sound actually started out as a blues and R&B-based outfit, not too different from the Spencer Davis Group. This double-CD set covers their complete EMI output, most of which has never been reissued, and almost all of which is very impressive (and even manages to intersect obliquely with Apple Records' orbit). The group's early soul-oriented sides are killers, exciting, totally convincing pieces of British-made R&B that, in the case of "Love" and "Medley: 60 Minutes of Your Love/A Lot of Love," should have placed them head-to-head with the likes of Steve Winwood and the Spencer Davis Group. Even when they move into a slightly trippier sound, on "There's a Little Picture Playhouse," the group still utilizes a basic soul ...
