Recorded live at The Village Gate, New York, New York. Originally released on Atlantic (1521).
This budget two-fer from the Jazz Collectables label teams up a pair of separate Atlantic recordings from jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby and pianist Junior Mance. On the 1965 release The Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby, the harpist is joined by bassist Richard Davis, drummer Grady Tate, percussionist Willie Bobo, and a sporadic horn section on four Ashby originals and six standards. The four lengthy tracks that make up Live at the Top were recorded in 1968 featuring Mance at the piano with bassist Wilbur Little, drummer Rudy Collins, and guest David "Fathead" Newman, who plays flute on "That's All" and tenor sax on his composition "Turning Point." These albums are optional to aficionados but definitely not a good place to start with either of these artists. ~ Al Campbell
Detroiter Ashby is the premier player on her instrument. With horns and percussion from Richard Davis (b), Grady Tate (d), Willie Bobo (per). ~ Michael G. Nastos

$16.45 The group Neutral Sisters consists of two sisters Kyra and Bianca Noons. Born in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya Africa, to an English father and Jamaican mother. The sister’s aspirations would be molded, as their father was a lead performer in the world renowned musical “Hair” also starring the legendary JOAN ARMATRADING. During the latter days of president Mzee Kenyatta reign, the African freedom fighter, the sisters grew to the chanting and drumming sounds of the MASAI warriors. In 1980 the family moved to London and spent the next seven years there before returning to Jamaica. The musical influences at the time came from a wide spectrum of sources. The likes of Marvin Gaye, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Donna Summer, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Jacob Miller would soon take hold.By the time Neutral reached Jamaica in 1986 they were listening to the sounds of Dennis Brown, Tony Rebel, Buju Banton, JC Lodge, Half Pint, Freddie McGregor and other reggae artists. The dancehall played quite an influence, as Neutral’s lyrics are conscious answers to statements posed in dancehall lyrics. Neutral Sister’s voice training came out of church choirs in London and Montego Bay High School choir and choirs in Houston Texas where they now resideIn 1998 Neutral went into “Yard Sound” recording studio, owned and operated by Orville Adams from Kingston Jamaica, in Houston Texas. The song “Live N Direct” was completed and immediately entered into the National Billboard songwriters contest. Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby songs
$6.69 Nothing keeps a sword sharper than another sword - "steel sharpens steel." Comparing their precise rhyming abilities to verbal weaponry, Sharpwordzmen are one of hottest up & coming Hip-Hop artists. The duo is comprised of Fa'Sho The DurdyBanga and Ill-umi-naiti. Their sound is unique because Fa'Sho is originally from Kansas City, Kansas and Ill-umi-naiti hails from Brooklyn, New York. They both held their own as solo MCs on the underground scene since in the mid-1990's. In 1996, a destined collaboration lead to the creation of their first masterpiece, "Dope Inc." Fa'Sho (formerly known as "Subterrainean Asian") released the blazing single "Have U Not Heard" in June 2002 as a solo MC. The song received heavy rotation in clubs and local radio stations. It also received write ups in various local publications. The science behind the name change was simple: Fa'Sho is southern slang which means "For Sure." It is guaranteed that his "durdy 'ass' 'n' triflin' style" will bang anywhere. His main musical influences growing ...
