| | Jazz At Preservation Hall, Vol. 1 & 2 CD (2 Customer Reviews)
Originally released in 1963 on two long-playing Atlantic phonograph records, the music on this disc is mid-20th century traditional New Orleans jazz at its most authentic. This music is both uplifting and down to earth. Most of the Afro-American musicians on this compilation were senior citizens when the records were released in 1963. Pianist Billie Pierce, her husband, trumpeter De De Pierce, clarinetist George Lewis and trombonists Louis Nelson and Jim Robinson all demonstrate their artistry with patience and fortitude. Yet by far the most exciting music here is that played by the Eureka Brass Band, featuring trumpeter Percy Humphrey, his brother clarinetist brother Willie Humphrey, saxophonist Emanuel Paul and especially the unison trombone playing of Albert Warner and Oscar Chicken Henry. The effect of these perfectly paired slip-horns during the ecstatic old-time spiritual "Take Your Burden to the Lord" is guaranteed to alter your brain chemistry in the friendliest and most positive manner imaginable. Crank the volume up and prepare to be transformed by genuine old-fashioned jazz as played, seen and heard in broad daylight under the open sky on the streets of New Orleans, LA. ~ arwulf arwulf
