25 cuts w. Link Davis, Sleepy La Beef, Glenn Barber, Byron Johnson + 9 bonus tracks 1956-65
Producers include: Jack Sturnes, Harold Daily, Marshall Ellis, Buford Cody, Harold Doane. This 25-track set of 1950s rockabilly and upbeat country shuffles is an extension of Ace's original LP issue with nine additional cuts added. Most of what is here is drawn from the vaults of Starday Records, a Texas label started by Jack Staines and Harold W. Daily, but there are also tracks compiled from Marshall E. Ellis' two Memphis labels, E&M and Erwin Records, and a single cut, Tommy Spurlin's "Hang Loose," from Florida-based Art Records. It's all a lot of fun and even revelatory at times, with tracks like Jimmy & Johnny's Everly Brothers-like "My Little Baby," the Cajun-tinged and rhythmically loose "Slipping and Sliding" by Link Davis, Pat Ferguson's "Fool I Am," and Eddie Boyd's "Here Comes That Train" all having the feel of lost gems. ~ Steve Leggett

Rockabilly Shakeout
$20.79 Compared with Buffalo Bop's usual rockabilly and teen-rebel collections, this 33-song compilation is kind of dorky -- sort of a nerd's picture of rock & roll (the Richie Cunningham as opposed to the Fonzie playlist). Nobody appearing on this CD ever aspired to be really cool like Elvis or Gene Vincent; Ricky Nelson was as far as they got. But it's all great fun in its well-crafted, highly produced way, and some of the artists and labels here will actually be familiar--Tony Orlando ("The Loneliest"), Steve Lawrence ("Pretty Blue Eyes"), Milo Liggett ...

Photographer: Moshe Brakha. Lynyrd Skynyrd begins to show signs of wear on their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. The band had switched producers, hiring Tom Dowd, the producer who served Atlantic's roster so well during the label's heyday. Unfortunately, he wasn't perfectly suited for Skynyrd, at least at this point in their history. The group had toured regularly since the release of their debut and it showed, not just in their performance, but in the songwriting of Ronnie Van Zant, who had been so consistent through their first three albums. Not to say that he was spent -- the title track was as defiant as "All I Can Do Is Write About It" was affecting, while "Searching" was a good ballad and "Double Trouble" was a good rocker. These songs, however, were surrounded by songs that leaned to the dull side of generic ...
