Doin' The Hully Gully/Dance By The... album
$20.49 KING ROCKABILLY contains tracks recorded for the King and Federal labels between 1954 and 1962.
While King had many facets of American country- and blues-derived popular music covered from the 1940s to the 1960s, it was far weaker in rockabilly than it was in blues, hillbilly country, R&B, and early soul. Still, it did record more rockabilly in the 1950s than many have realized, although Charlie Feathers's releases in the style tend to be the only King ones that are remembered. A couple dozen rockabilly items from the mid-'50s to the early '60s are here, and only a few names will be recognized even by rock scholars. There's Feathers (with an alternate take of "Bottle to the Baby"); Moon Mullican (with his 1956 single ...
| | Anywhere The Girls Are! The Best Of The Fantastic Baggys CD (2000)
Doin' The Hully Gully/Dance By The... CD music
$15.39 Along with the entire Tell 'Em I'm Surfin' LP, this CD adds a heap o' extras: the 1964 non-LP single "Debbie Be True"/"Anywhere the Girls Are," a couple of songs that showed up on a 1966 South African LP, the 1965 non-LP single "It Was I," and nine alternate/instrumental/vocal overdub/variations versions, most of them previously unreleased. "Debbie Be True," complete with "Don't Worry Baby"-type guitar chording, would have been pretty fair Beach Boys album filler; "It Was I" is a not-bad update of the old Skip & Flip hit rockaballad; and "(Goes to Show) Just How Wrong You Can Be," which would be re-recorded by P.F. Sloan in the mid-'60s as a solo artist, shows Sloan and Steve Barri's growth into more serious directions. To be honest, though, most of those extras are nothing more than very modest variations from ...
| | Pete Miller Summerland CD (2000)
Doin' The Hully Gully/Dance By The... music CDs
$11.49 Summerland has the same eerily compressed production values featured on the brilliant psychedelic work of Pete Miller, his vocals slathered in echo and almost crawling out from beneath the music. But whereas that vocal effect worked to perfection on his trippiest work, in the more conventional pop-demo setting of Summerland, it instead exposes his limitations as a singer, perhaps the only reason he never became a well-known figure in the Brit-pop world of the '60s. That is quibbling, to say the least, because his vocals, while not rangy, are still full of warmth and alluring mystery. But otherwise, there is no logical explanation for such a criminal oversight in the annals ...
| | Cryan Shames Synthesis CD (1969)
Doin' The Hully Gully/Dance By The... songs
$11.59 Synthesis is an apt name for an album that, like its predecessor, A Scratch in the Sky, proved the Cryan' Shames to be among the most versatile mainstream pop/rock groups of the late '60s. Versatile does not mean great, though, or especially interesting, and can also mean an absence of a solid identity. This record is more eclectic than it is exciting, though the ...
