Smith cut these sides for Joe Bihari of Modern Records shortly after he left the Muddy Waters Band in the early '50s. He is featured here with a rhythm section framed by horns arranged by the legendary and prolific Maxwell Davis. Smith's innate sense of drive and swing, coupled with his rich and diverse palette of texture and tone, truly place him in the very first rank of modern harp masters. Now You Can Talk About Me collects mid- and late-period Smith, with the harmonica genius' '60s sides for the microscopic imprint Sotoplay sampled on the first five cuts. The remainder of the album is from a 1982 session for the Murray Brothers label with Rod Piazza behind the board, which produced the Boogie'n with George album. Also included are the previously unreleased "Last Chance" and a powerful instrumental slow-burner. If the first volume of Merline Johnson's complete recordings was highly rewarding, volume two is utterly essential, as it contains some of her all-time best, most exciting, and jazz-infused performances. Susceptible listeners may find it difficult to remain seated during "Running Down My Man" (which sounds a lot like one of Washboard Sam's upbeat creations), as a fine trumpeter (possibly Punch Miller) and a tenor saxophonist (probably Bill Owsley) swing like mad atop a well-oiled rhythm section that includes pianist Blind John Davis and electrically amplified guitarist George Barnes.
