Recorded from 1948 to the early '50s. Includes liner notes by Ann Savoy.
Iry Lejune was one of the leading figures in transforming Cajun music from its fiddle-driven style of the '30s to the accordion-led approach that dominated the genre throughout the '40s and '50s. This material, of late-'40s/early-'50s vintage, showcases the blind accordionist at his most impassioned, in the company of an equally nimble fiddler, bassist, and guitarist.
Waltzes dominate the proceedings, with no fewer than seven songs that contain the word "Waltz" in their title. The jangly and plaintive "Durald Waltz" is spiked by yelps both human and canine in origin. There are some surprising stylistic diversions here that keep things interesting, most notably "Te Mone," with its swooning slide-guitar outro. Another highpoint is "Church Point Breakdown," a track that almost seems to presage the Dylan gem "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again." Those who can comprehend the Cajun French in which LeJune so passionately sings will no doubt gain added pleasure from this collection. In selections like "Grand Nuit Special" and "Clacasieu Waltz," LeJune seems stirred on by vocal forces of the rarest insistency.

Cajun's Greatest: The Definitive Collection
$14.89 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, ...
| | Bob Dylan Modern Times CD (2006) Deluxe Edition includes bonus DVD
Cajun's Greatest: The Definitive Collection
$15.95 Musically, the album finds Dylan once again mining the stately traditionalist sound first heard on LOVE AND THEFT. Lazy blues numbers, piano-based songbook pop, and jumpin' country swing provide the backdrop for Dylan's continuing study of the vicissitudes of life, love, and death. Although he is certainly world-weary, a lot of life is lived in the verses of these songs and there is a dogged spirituality that provides, if not hope (a rather prosaic notion for Dylan by this point, to be sure), at least a means to finding contentment. Finally, a word about Dylan's voice here: while his singing has always been unconventional and never pretty in any traditional sense, in its raspy magnificence it is simply perfect for this timeless music.
Bob Dylan's first new album in five years! His 44th album features 10 new songs and is the third release in an outstanding trilogy along with Time Out Of Mind and Love And Theft. This special edition includes a DVD featuring 4 additional songs and an expanded booklet.
It's arguable that at no point since his 1960s heyday has Bob Dylan been as celebrated as in the decade following his critically acclaimed ...

| | Mac Wiseman Most Requested CD (2001)
Cajun's Greatest: The Definitive Collection
$14.69 Combining the setup and general feel of a bluegrass band with the heartbreaking arrangements of traditional country, Mac Wiseman's Most Requested is a reflection of his success at both styles of music. Wiseman pulls off his blend by using his most powerful attribute -- his voice. His sad tenor howl floats effortlessly over the picking and strumming, making for not only a beautiful combination of styles but something that has his distinctive stamp on it. On standards like "In the Pines" and "House of the Rising Sun," Wiseman's arrangements make them into lazy country ballads, with hints of bluegrass coming through. But then on tracks like "The Bluebirds Are Singing for Me," the banjos and chugging rhythms are out in full force and the country is only suggested through Wiseman's voice. ...
