| | Louisiana Saturday Night CD - Import (1 Customer Review)
Like its predecessor (Another Saturday Night, also on Ace), this is a compilation of Louisiana swamp pop, the admixture of rock, country, blues, pop, and Cajun that continues to thrive in the region. Most of the 26 tracks are vintage sides from the '60s, although there are a few of later origin. Some of the artists are nothing more than names to anyone outside of the state, but actually there are a few more recognizable artists here than on the first volume, including Rusty and Doug Kershaw, Rockin' Sidney, Rod Bernard, Clifton Chenier, and Bobby Charles. It's rock music with an overt good-time flavor, the sonic equivalent of a lazy drawl. In terms of diversity and quality, it actually has a bit of an edge over Another Saturday Night, although it isn't truly landmark stuff. The collection includes Cookie & the Cupcakes' "Mathilda," one of the few national hit singles of the genre (making number 47 in 1959), and the original version of "You Ain't Nothing But Fine" (by Rockin' Sidney), which would be covered by the Fabulous Thunderbirds. ~ Richie Unterberger
Contains 26 tracks.

| | Elvin Bishop Booty Bumpin' CD (2007)
Louisiana Saturday Night album
$13.65 Booty Bumpin' is a joyous, down home set from blues guitarist Elvin Bishop and his six-piece band, recorded live on December 3, 2006 at Constable Jack's in California. Bishop is probably best known for the 1976 hit "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," and has maintained a loyal blues following since his early days as a member of the Butterfield Blues Band. On Bishop's second release for Blind Pig, he and his co-horts apply a good-natured heat to 12 tracks that stylistically shift between Chicago blues, Cajun, New Orleans R&B, and a hint of Southern rock, driven by the leader's raw slide guitar and keen sense of humor. Along with several Bishop originals are a few choice cover versions including Roy Milton's "Keep a Dollar in Your Pocket," Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "I Feel Alright Again" and the Allen Toussaint composition "I'm Gone." Booty Bumpin' is definitely a timeless, no-nonsense party album. ~ Al Campbell

Those with short memories will draw no parallel between the intercontinental smash "Asereje" and that of the infamous "Macarena" from about six years prior. Like the latter, "Asereje" is an insanely catchy dance/pop/Latin tune with dance craze written all over it. The perpetrators, the colorfully named Las Ketchup, are a trio of fetching young lasses whose father is Antonio "El Tomate" Fernandez, a noted guitarist. The music itself is somewhere between Maca-you-know-what and Ricky Martin, with plenty of synthesized zip. Oh yeah, LAS HIJAS DEL TOMATE also contains some other songs, but we defy you to get past the flagship single.
One might think that, with both a band name and record title so whimsical, Las Ketchup's 2002 release, Hijas del Tomate, is not to be taken seriously. But after hitting number one in several of Billboard's ...
