Jimmy C. Newman had several country hits in the 1950s before he turned his career increasingly in the direction of traditional Louisiana two-step material, although his approach was never strictly purist. This interesting two-disc set includes the LP that Newman released to support his 1974 hit "Lache Pas la Patate" as well as several sides by Cajun vocalist Vin Bruce and selections from fiddle aces Rufus Thibodeaux and Doc Guidry, highlighting the string band approach to Cajun music rather than the more familiar accordion-driven model. ~ Steve Leggett
Cajun meets country on this 30 track album from Carol Rachou's Lafayette-based La Louisianne Records - this 1974 release contains French & English versions of songs, feat. guests Rufus Thibodeaux, Doc Guidry & Vin Bruce

| | Travis Tritt Down The Road I Go CDs (2000)
Sings Cajun
$8.49 Travis Tritt recorded DOWN THE ROAD I GO after a self-imposed 18-month hiatus that saw him become a father for the second time, and sign with a new record company. The break seems to have done him good--DOWN THE ROAD I GO is more streamlined than his previous album, NO MORE LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER. It's also pure country, both in its instrumentation and its subject matter.
The title track finds Tritt back in full outlaw mode, spitting contempt at any woman who tries to tie him down. "Livin' On Borrowed Time," a blue-collar lament, is reminiscent of Tritt's earlier hit, "Lord Have Mercy On the Workin' Man." Tritt also looks to his musical influences--he wrote two songs with his idol, Charlie Daniels, while the CD's highlight, "Never Get Away From Me" was inspired by and written for Waylon Jennings and his wife, Jessi Colter. Tritt turns in a great, tough-but-tender vocal performance here, adding just the right amount of Jennings-esque swagger. Overall, DOWN THE ROAD is an understated, heartfelt collection that illustrates why Tritt has lasted so long in the fickle world of modern country music.
Recorded at Emerald Sound, Sound Emporium, Our Place and Sound Stage Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.

| | Big Bill Broonzy All The Classic Sides 1928-1937 CDs (2004) Box Set
Sings Cajun
$23.75 Of all the pre-war Delta bluesman, no one achieved the popular status of Big Bill Broonzy. Indeed, as Neil Slaven states in his liner notes to Volume One of this collection, Broonzy had been issuing recordings for over 20 years before his last name was attached to the labels; only "Big Bill" appeared under the track listing. This five-CD collection by JSP is astonishing in its scope. There are 128 tracks here from the first decade of Broonzy's recording career, featuring every 78 recorded during the period, for labels such as Paramount, Jewel, ARC, Perfect, Romeo, ...
