The third and last volume of the Gumbo Stew series of retrospectives of the New Orleans-based AFO label is perhaps the least impressive of the set. That doesn't mean it's bad, just that much of the 24-song set is rather generic early-'60s Crescent City R&B (with a few cuts dating from the late '60s). However, that's a style which can be both generic and enjoyable, which most of this set is, due to the competence of the singers and players. Barbara George, Alvin Robinson, Eddie Bo, and pianist James Booker (represented by a previously unreleased instrumental) are all here. There are also a couple of enjoyable instrumentals by Dr. John (one previously unissed), "The Point" feature some seriously fierce cheese-o organ. Eddie Bo's bouncing "I Found a Little Girl" and Tami Lynn's sultry, soulful ballad "Baby" are also standouts, although on the whole the disc will mostly attract R&B specialists. ~ Richie Unterberger

a compilation of r&b from the New Orleans label, AFO, w. Dr. John, Eddie Bo, Willie Tee+, 24 tracks, 10 prev. unreleased

Most casual fans know the Climax Blues Band through "Couldn't Get It Right" and "I Love You," a pair of slick pop and soft rock hits from the late '70s and early '80s. Anyone who heard those two hits probably was puzzled by the "Blues" in the group's name, since they were in no way bluesy. But, as shown by the double-disc, 32-track set 25 Years, they started out as a British blues band in the late '60s. Unfortunately, they just weren't very good, slogging through the same three chords without much inspiration for nearly ten years. That decade is represented on the first disc, and while the group does show signs of improvement over those 16 songs, the music is still unbelievably dull (and, in the case of "Shoot Her If She Runs," offensive). By the late '70s, the band was in desperate need of a hit, so they changed their tune, incorporating pop, disco, and soft rock. "Couldn't Get It Right" was an excellent song, far catchier than any of their early blues tunes, and it deservedly became a Top Ten hit. The group subsequently tried to replicate its success, but they couldn't get it right until 1981, when the appealingly schmaltzy "I Love You" almost went Top Ten. Afterward, they played soft rock until they broke down and returned to the blues, with only a handful ...

Central Park Carousel
Fire Apes Central Park Carousel CD  (2005)

Still Spicy Gumbo Stew songs
CD $14.79
The latest Brit-pop invasion comes from Charleston, South Carolina in the guise of The Fire Apes and their fine sophomore release Central Park Carousel . While these dozen songs ring true with that affable sound of pleasant 1960s jangle pop, there's often more behind that songs than what's obvious. The Fire Apes is mostly the efforts of John Seymour, who is surrounded by a band only on two tracks here. Other than that (and the constant presence of Paolo Licciardi on drums), Seymour has written all the songs, does all the vocals, plays all the guitars and bass and even contributes percussion. He's the creative powerhouse behind this new collection - and his talents translate to some very enjoyable pop that hearkens back to an earlier era. John Seymour is an avid reader and thinker, so inspirations from the literary world or political events often find their subtle way into the lyrics of what may seem on the surface to be merely love songs. Even the name of the band is derived from an essay by Loren Eisley about how a certain species discovers something (like fire) and then eventually it gets incorporated into the lives of the whole species. Eisley was inspired by nothing more than squirrels gaining access into birdfeeders - so go figure. The current CD's title of course is a nod to J.D. Salinger's "Catcher In The Rye," wherein the Central Park Carousel plays a pivotal role in the plot (where Holden watches Phoebe on the carousel, perhaps his greatest moment of happiness in the book). The songs here generally reflect that happiness. The CD opens with "Lori," a genial guitar-driven pop song that confesses a love for someone relatively unknown ("I don't know her / I think I love her") that is in part inspired by Salinger's short stories ...
