The unearthly harmonies that emanated from the Everly Brothers' stellar Cadence years infiltrated not only the United States, but much of the U.K. as well. Their influence runs the gamut from the Beatles to the Proclaimers, and the Ace label's Original British Singles compilation backs that notion up like a mountainside. "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Since You Broke My Heart," and "When Will I Be Loved?" are all Everly classics, and while this period has been covered before, Original British Singles is right up there with Rhino's Cadence Classics: Their 20 Greatest Hits. This is the cream of the crop. ~ James Christopher Monger

Original British Hit Singles songs
$15.65 Philwit & Pegasus is an epic in search of a narrative or gripping theme, not to mention decent pop songs. The quite detailed and lengthy historical liner notes on the CD reissue of this rarity give the impression that principal creator Mark Wirtz thought he was devising an arty song cycle of sorts, or a movie on record. What it sounds like, however, is a collection of fairly unrelated unexceptional pop songs, decorated by occasionally ambitious grandiose instrumentation that sometimes puts it as close to easy listening as to pop/rock. The influence of the most Baroque elements of the Beach Boys and late-'60s California sunshine pop can be felt at times (particularly on "My What a Lovely Day It's Been"), as can (on "Yoyo Thoughts") early mellow laid-back L.A. country-folk-rock. Then, however, you get to "And I Try," which sounds like an even more overwrought Tom Jones tackling an MOR ballad. It's an odd and not especially tasty mixture. [The 2003 CD reissue on RPM adds four bonus tracks.] ~ Richie Unterberger

Original British Hit Singles CD music
$14.09 Recorded in Memphis during the late 1960s, HOME SWEET HOME is a wonderfully off-the-cuff example of the seemingly endless stream of musical creativity and strange brilliance that Memphis has to offer. Originally released in 1970 on Stax, though having few similarities with the sound and style that made that label famous, HOME SWEET HOME is studio whiz/hepcat Terry Manning's unique musical gumbo of blues, '60s psychedelia, R&B, and frat rock. Manning did nearly all the recording and playing himself (although he does get some help from a few friends, including Big Star's Chris Bell in what is believed to be Bell's first appearance on tape) over a two-year period at the famed Ardent studios. A strange album if there ever was one (check out the 10-minute-plus opening cover of George Harrison's "Savoy Truffle"), HOME SWEET HOME is by record folks for record folks: instead of listening to them at 3:00 a.m. with a bunch of friends, imagine making one.
Terry Manning's 1970 solo album, Home Sweet Home, started off as something of a joke when he recorded a deliberately over the top psychedelic version of the Box Tops' "Choo Choo Train." When ...
