Combo Vocal Groups, issued by the Ace label, documents some of the doo wop records released by the Combo label. Much of the material included here is receiving legitimate release on CD for the very first time. Boasting remastered sound and loving preservation, it might not be essential listening for those who are getting their feet wet with doo wop, but it obviously provides a necessary service to longtime followers of the fertile, historic genre. Bob Dylan is not a blues musician, of course, and this album is not, as its title might imply, a disc on which he performs a set of traditional blues songs. It is, rather, a compilation of previously released Dylan originals spanning more than 35 years that illustrates the influence of the blues on his music. (The album was released exclusively through bookseller Barnes & Noble.) The Crescent City’s Happy Talk Band formed in 2000 and then reformed in Post-Katrina New Orleans in 2005. The new incarnation consists of Bailey Smith and Alex McMurray on guitars, Steve Calandra on bass, Mike Andrepont on drums, Mitch Palmer on lapsteel and banjo, and song writer Luke Allen singing and playing a twenty-five dollar nylon string acoustic guitar. Allen’s songs are a series of eulogies and apologies set to the uncompromising rhythm of a drunken Decatur Street crawl. “There there” (2007) is Happy Talk Band’s second release and Gallatin Street Files and Archaic Media’s (GFAM) first. “Total Death Benefit” (2004) will be re-released by GFAM in 2008.from Gambit Weekly 10/02/07Mourning Glory By Alison Fensterstock The Happy Talk Band's There, There is stuck between rock and a hard place. When Luke Allen came by to drop off a copy of There, There, his second CD with his longtime project the Happy Talk Band, he popped open the jewel case to read off a curious annotation of the dedications in the liner notes: 'Suicide, suicide, O.D. — which is basically suicide — O.D., murder, murder, suicide." It's not that Allen is necessarily a morbid guy " Happy Talk's 2003 album, Total Death Benefit, a unique alternative folk-rock collection of bitter love songs and boozy, self-conscious ballads, cemented him as a keen chronicler of downtown New Orleans bohemia. He's spent a good bit of the four years since as a bartender, serving drinks to the people he writes about on There, There. The thing that stands out the most on the album is the collection of memorial songs. 'Pete, Kelly, Bucky, Yvette down the street " Allen counts off. 'There's a little bit of everybody on there." Although Allen seems to be a speedy eulogist, he says the process isn't directly contingent on bad news. 'Sometimes I get a line here or there, and I write the song in pieces. And then the latest tragedy comes around, and I realize I've been writing about it all along." There, There takes place in the storm's physical and emotional wreckage, but when it evokes the fallout of the disaster, it does so on the most personal of scales. And sometimes its presence is only theoretical, as with 'Sometimes Sailors," the story of a friend who shot himself a week before the levees failed. 'He had floating bodies in his head," Allen muses, wondering what difference, if any, it would have made if he'd waited and seen them made real.
