| | Golden Age Of American Rock 'N' Roll Vol. 5 CD - Import (2 Customer Reviews)
It's been said before, but it bears repeating: much of the history (and soul) of early rock & roll resides not only in the recordings of giants like Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Holly, but in the literally hundreds of acts who managed to produce one or two great singles, in an incredible variety of styles. You can't claim to have a comprehensive rock & roll collection without seeking these out, and you'll have a surprising amount of fun doing so. The fifth volume of the Golden Age of American Rock'n'Roll series shows no signs of flagging in its mission to document these important sounds. Big hits by stars (Freddie Cannon, Jan & Dean, Gene Chandler); huge one-shot hits like Dale & Grace's "I'm Leaving It Up to You," and Johnnie & Joe's "Over the Mountain, Across the Sea," and Jimmy McCracklin's "The Walk"; treasured cult classics by the Showmen ("It Will Stand") and Eddie Fontaine ("Nothin' Shakin'," covered by the Beatles on Live at the BBC); all are here, and more. ~ Richie Unterberger

| Golden Age Of American Rock 'N' Roll Vol. 5 Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Three thumbs up for Volume 5.
Volume 5 is probably the best out of the first five CDs in this series. 11 out of 30 Top Ten hits. The first track, “Wiggle Wiggle” sets the mood for the rest of this album – up beat and up tempo. One of the most comprehensive oldies collections ever, 300 songs on 10 CDs, ACE is to be commended for their efforts at preserving and bringing this collection of mid 50s - early 60s music to market. They didn’t do the usual Top Ten Hits as did Billboard. They did the top 100! This album contains 30 more great songs from the 1954 - 1963 era. If you are old enough to remember the big hits of this time period, on this CD, you will find several of those Top Ten hits as well as many of the lessor hits you’ve forgotten about. Listening to this CD is like it was on the radio when your favorite DJ just happened to play all your favorites back to back. All those good songs, love songs, funny songs and a few in-between hits of the day. If you want to take a trip back in time, go first class and buy this CD. If you are too young to remember these great songs firsthand and want to hear what the true “Golden Era” of Rock & Roll was all about, give this CD a try. Recording quality is excellent (remember these are 40+ year old recordings) and with the exception of “She Cried”, all of the songs are in mono. Background noise is virtually non-existent. If you remember these songs, you will hear them on this CD as you have never heard them before. 18 pages of liner notes make for some very enjoyable reading. I’d give this album three thumbs up but I only have two hands!
