| | Golden Age Of American Rock 'N' Roll, Vol. 6 CD (3 Customer Reviews)
As this series progresses, there's a higher proportion of obscure material involved. This is both good and bad: it's good to find worthy minor hits that have largely missed the CD revolution, but some of them didn't make it above the '80s on the charts for good reason. Nonetheless, there are some real goodies here, whether hard to find or not: the Del Vikings' "Come Go with Me," and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Want to Dance," the El Dorados' "At My Front Door," the Rivingtons' "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow," and Joe Bennett's "Black Slacks." Among the rarities, the most interesting items are John Fred's "Shirley" (recorded almost ten years before "Judy in Disguise"), Ronald & Ruby's original version of "Lollipop" (surpassed commercially by the Chordettes' rendition), the Quotations' "Imagination" (top-flight doo wop), and Bunker Hill's "Hide and Go Seek" (described in the liners as "like a gospel holler in a squash court"). Pick find: the Pentagons' "I Wonder," which sounds like a great lost Drifters hit from the early '60s. ~ Richie Unterberger

| Golden Age Of American Rock 'N' Roll, Vol. 6 Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The good years Anything from the early 1950s until that darn British invasion is for me. Good purchase. Submitted by dmlranch (Burtrum, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not quite the match of Vol. 1-5, but still good. Volume 6 doesn’t quite equal the first five CDs in this series. 7 out of 30 Top Ten hits in this collection. There are several good songs to be heard .....and several more that sound more like fillers or B side music. One of the most comprehensive oldies collections ever, ACE is to be commended for their efforts at preserving and bringing this collection of mid 50s - early 60s music to market. They didn’t do the usual Top Ten Hits as did Billboard. They did the top 100! This album contains 30 more great (and some not so great) songs from the 1955 - 1962 era. If you are old enough to remember the big hits of this time period, on this CD, you will find a few of them. Mostly, you will hear many of the lessor hits you’ve forgotten about and several that are just plain unrecognizable. If you want to take a trip back in time, go first class and buy Volumes 1-5. Recording quality over-all is excellent (remember these are 40+ year old recordings), with the exception of “Hide and go seek”. This song has noticeable distortion in the louder parts of the vocals. Background noise is virtually non-existent throughout the album. If you remember any of these songs, you will hear them on this CD as you have never heard them before. Excellent liner notes makes for some very enjoyable reading. Four songs in stereo, the rest are mono. Run time is 73:03

$5.99 You've got to figure that there's something to do with record contract machinations in Kate Campbell's curious decision to re-record 29 of the 33 songs on her second (Moonpie Dreams), third (Visions of Plenty), and fourth (Rosaryville) albums, all originally released on Compass Records, and instead issue them on two albums, this one and Sing Me Out, released ...
