| | Harp Blues CD (1 Customer Review)
This 25-track collection brings together some of the most inspiring blues harp performances on record. With the exception of John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Bring Me Another Half a Pint" (what's better known as Jimmy Rogers' "Sloppy Drunk" and originally penned even earlier by Lucille Bogan) from 1948, everything on here was recorded in the '50s to the late '60s at the height of the electric blues boom. Representative and sometimes definitive performances from Big Walter Horton ("Easy," "Need My Baby" and the solo on Jimmy Rogers' "Walkin' By Myself"), Little Walter ("Roller Coaster"), Jimmy Reed ("Found Love"), Snooky Pryor ("Boogie Twist"), Sonny Boy Williamson ("99"), Jerry McCain (the rare, alternate take of "Steady") and Little Junior Parker ("Sweet Home Chicago") pepper this set. But the rarities from Eddie Hope (the raucous "A Fool No More"), Little Willie Foster ("Little Girl"), Papa Lightfoot (an explosive transfer of "Wine, Women, Whiskey"), Howlin' Wolf ("Howlin' Wolf Boogie"), Sammy Myers ("Sleeping in the Ground") and Joe Hill Louis ("Western Union Man") are every bit as potent as the bigger names aboard. Great selections from Doctor Ross, Billy Boy Arnold, Frank Frost, James Cotton, Junior Wells, George Smith, Shy Guy Douglas and the mysterious Cousin Leroy complete the collection. ~ Cub Koda

$19.95 Thirty songs (16 previously unissued) drawn from the archives of Autumn Records, the San Francisco-based label founded by deejays Tom Donahue and Bobby Mitchell, with a young producer named Sylvester (aka "Sly") Stewart mostly running the musical end. The biggest act ever on Autumn was the Beau Brummels, who ended up on Warner Bros. when the label was sold in 1966, but there were lots of other good (and even a few better) groups on the label -- the Mojos, represented here by the title track and a nicely snarling version of the Stones' "Off the Hook," and a bunch of others, among them the Tikis (later much more famous as Harpers Bizarre), the Chosen Few, the Us, the Bundles, the Gear One, and the Knight Riders. The sounds here are, obviously, quintessential mid-1960s, with some good garage band representation, including "Little One" ...

Harp Blues music CDs
$12.85 A huge departure for this masked, previously all-instrumental surf quartet, their fifth album is, as indicated by its title, augmented by vocals. But not just any vocals. Eleven out of the 13 tracks boast a different singer (Big Sandy, who also toured with the band in 2001, appears twice) adding just the right touch to the disc's eclectic covers of rockin' soul (los Bravos' "Black Is Black" with the Mavericks' Raul Malo), British Invasion-styled pop ("Bumble Bee" with a rare vocal from Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell), good-time roots (Nick Lowe is guest lead bassist on his own "Shake That Rat," one of the disc's two instrumentals), weepy string-laden '60s ballads (Sixpence None the Richer's Leigh Nash gives a perfectly frail reading of Skeeter Davis' "End of the World"), Cramps-style high octane swamp (Reverend Horton Heat toughens up Roy Orbison's "Down the Line"), their usual ...

| | Soul Essentials: Best Of Roy Ayers CD (1997)
Harp Blues music CDs
$9.79 Recorded between 1987 & 1981. Includes liner notes by Greg Casseu.
This greatest-hits title was the first of its kind upon its release in 1979. During that time, Roy Ayers was one of the leading acts on Polydor Records and solidified his R&B/disco success with "Running Away," included here. The dichotomy between Ayers as a jazz act and an R&B/jazz quiet storm presence is all but kicked off by this album. The emphasis is on the earlier work. The definitive early-'70s songs "Red Black and Green" and "We Live in Brooklyn Baby" both retain their snap and visceral charm. A few great tracks aren't here (including "Kiss" and "Is It Too Late to Try"), but The Best of Roy Ayers: Love Fantasy goes the extra mile to include not only the best of Roy Ayers' work but also key non-hits such as "Gotta Find a Lover" and "You Send Me." ~ Jason Elias
