orig. Dot masters 1962-65 21 tracks
This material was originally issued on the Dot label between 1962-65. Digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Personnel: Arthur Alexander (vocals). Liner Note Author: Bill Millar. While this is a fine collection of Arthur Alexander's Dot work and his early singles for Judd, the name Greatest Hits is a bit of a misnomer; Rainbow Road: The Warner Bros. Recordings is a more comprehensive look at Alexander's career as a whole. However, what Greatest Hits lacks in breadth it more than makes up for in depth, gathering classics like "Anna (Go to Him)," "Go Home Girl," "You Better Move On," and "Where Have You Been (All My Life)" -- all of which capture the bittersweet soulfulness of Alexander's best-known work -- as well as less well-known songs like 1962's "Dream Girl." Even the lesser-known songs on this collection reflect the wonderful warmth and bittersweetness that Alexander brought to his music. Atypically cheerful, upbeat singles like 1961's "A Shot of Rhythm & Blues" and the following year's "You're the Reason" don't detract from the flow of "Detroit City (I Wanna Go Home)," "Call Me Lonesome," "All I Need Is You," and the other ballads that dominate this collection. Even though this isn't the most complete Arthur Alexander collection available, it still features some of his best, most heartfelt music. ~ Heather Phares In the mid-eighties, English reissue label Ace Records introduced the wonderful music of Arthur Alexander to a new generation of music fans. Though Alexander was known for having written songs that were covered by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, prior to the Ace reissues, Alexander's own music languished in near obscurity, with only the most dedicated soul music collectors being familiar with the sublime pop-soul records that he made in the early sixties. Combining the best tracks from the two vinyl Arthur Alexander collections issued by Ace, THE GREATEST collects 21 of Alexander's greatest performances on one tidy CD. While there is a good deal of overlap with Razor and Tie's 16-song ULTIMATE compilation--particularly with the better-known tracks like "Anna" and "Shot Of Rhythm And Blues"--ULTIMATE contains six excellent tracks that are only available on this CD.

$14.19 Producer: Buddy Killen. Compilation producers: Bill Dahl, Cary E. Mansfield. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California). Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. If you're set on having the best available Joe Tex CD anthology and you already have the 1996 16-track Rhino comp The Very Best of Joe Tex, it might vex you to learn that all 16 of those songs are on this 25-song anthology, making the Rhino disc redundant should you decide to upgrade. If you don't have a Joe Tex CD anthology yet, though, you're in luck, as this definitely supersedes others as the greatest-hits collection of choice. All but one of these songs (the 1965 B-side "Don't Let Your Left Hand Know") was a chart single, and aside from the 1977 hit "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)," all are from his prime 1965-1972 period. Of the songs not on the Rhino disc, highlights are the 1965 slowies "You Better Get It" and "A Woman Can Change a Man," and the aforementioned "Don't Let Your ...

Includes liner notes by Dave Godin. Liner Note Author: Dave Godin. Recording information: Sounds Of Memphis Inc (1964-1970). Arrangers: Chips Moman; Dan Penn. A seminal deep soul singer with a voice that combined the sheer power of Otis Redding's scratchy holler with the emotional subtlety of Sam Cooke's deathless croon, James Carr routinely tops critics lists of "finest male soul singers," but often goes unrecognized by the general public. His career-making 1967 recording of Dan Penn and Chip Moman's heart wrenching "Dark End of The Street" is the definitive take on the song, easily besting versions by the likes of Aretha Franklin ...
