(1 Customer Review)
After dissolving his second power trio, Sugar, Bob Mould wrote and recorded BOB MOULD (a self-titled release sometimes referred to as HUBCAB, due to its cover art). The credits even proclaim "Bob Mould is Bob Mould," and "This one is for me." The fact that the album was written and performed by one man, however, does not mean that this is a low-fi aberration--rather, it's a sonically dense but extremely controlled excursion, and the next logical step in his career.
Standouts include the brittle "I Hate Alternative Rock," "Egoveride," a crunching rocker featuring a wicked overdriven guitar sound, and an astonishingly bitter series of end-of-the-relationship songs. Among them are "Anymore Time Between," easily one of Mould's most painful moments, "Next Time That You Leave," a poignant, mostly restrained (except for the seething choruses) affair, and the intensely angry "Hair Stew," where the self-loathing lyrics are colored with searing feedback squelches. With its downer lyrics, BOB MOULD is not an easy record to like; however if everyone's cathartic release was to record albums this good, the world would be a much better place.

Photographer: Mark C.Spin (6/96, p.115) - 6 - Reasonably Good - "...dominated by declarations of independence....may reaffirm your faith in rock as a vehicle for anguish..." Entertainment Weekly (5/3/96, pp.74-76) - "...Mould is often given to feelings of defeatism, anger, and self-pity. But what distinguishes BOB MOULD, his strongest album in years...is that the music constantly wards off those self-destructive feelings..." - Rating: A- Option (7-8/96, p.120) - "...as vengefully inspired as ever..." Musician (6/96, p.94) - "...Never the cheeriest of souls, the punk rock vet bursts out in all directions here, and the result is an unnerving psychodrama..." RIP (6/96, p.11) - 5 (out of 5) - "...With its bracing mix of multi-layered buzzsaw anthems and sparsely arranged one-man-and-his-guitar tracks, this masterful album presents, as never before, Mould's stunning range..." Mojo (Publisher) (6/96, p.117) - "...The sound is typical Mould: either stern, grey sheets of distorted guitar chording embellished with the occasional stab of feedback, or the furiously spartan acoustic guitar strumming, as in 'Thumbtack'..." NME (Magazine) (4/27/96, p.55) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Mould has spent 15 years making miserabilism listenable, draping the spangly cloak of pop about melancholy's sloping shoulders....Mould is most assuredly having his cake while still enjoying a slice..." | | Pugsley Munion Just Like You CD (1970)
Bob Mould music CDs
$11.59 Pugsley Munion began life under the name Mask in Fitchburg, Massachusetts . When the band recorded their first record for J & S Records in 1969 they found that the name Mask was already used so they had to come up with a new name for the band. So the story goes the bands road crew came up with the name Pugsley from street sign in New York and the Munion came from the name of a cop that had run into at a donut shop after a gig one night hence the name Pugsley Munion. The band consisted of John Schuller keyboards, vocals and acoustic guitar, Thomas "Ducky" Belliveau, guitars bass & vocals, and Edward Kelly on drums and percussion. Schuller, the creative force behind the band wrote or co-wrote with Belliveau every track on their album. This very rare album was originally released in 1970 on J&S Records, a small R&B label and was recorded in New York at the Bell Sound Studios. The album contains some tasty guitar work on some of the tracks together with Schuller's thundering organ sound which makes this a totally unique hard rock album that will appeal to fans of many late sixties hard rock blues sounding bands. The band members are still involved in the music scene with Schuller recording in the mid 80's as part of Orion The Hunter with Boston members and Belliveau being one of America's top session players touring and playing on albums with such notables as John Cafferty, Terrance Trent D'Arby Peter Wolfe and many more. Kelly is also a much in demand area session drummer. As a bonus to the original album this reissue contains two alternate demo versions of songs as well as a live song recorded in 1971. The CD booklet contains information on the band written by John Schuller and the songs have been taken from the master tapes for a crisp clean sound. ~ Keith Pettipas
There are any number of intriguing curios and lost treasures from the late '60s and early '70s, and Gear Fab has had a knack for finding some of the rarest and finest among them -- or at least ones that have retained a degree of listenability or charm -- but this CD is just not one of them. It's difficult to even understand what a record company might have seen in Pugsley Munion back when Just Like You was released in 1970, since it's barely more than competent. It certainly hasn't aged too gracefully. For one, it's not even a fully fleshed out album, featuring a rough mix and practice-like performances from the band. Musically, there's a little bit of excitement here and there: the good-time boogie rock and irresistible go-go bass groove of "Second Time for Me," the guitar-riff hook of "Take My Soul," and the stellar drum opening and nice guitar work of "Trouble" and "I Don't Know ...
| | Billy Idol Charmed Life CD (1990)
Bob Mould songs
$5.49 This is a special limited edition package with a fold-out poster booklet similar to Aerosmith's "Pump" and Robert Plant's "Manic Nirvana."
By 1990's aptly named Charmed Life, Billy Idol was seemingly more well-known for his excessive lifestyle than his creative zenith of a few years prior. This made his channeling of Jim Morrison on a rowdy cover of "LA Woman" even more apt. He had done so before, of course, most memorably on 1986's Whiplash Smile. But where Idol's clever amalgam of dance beats and punky guitar breaks had done its part to define the 1980s, his update of the classic Doors song was the new sound of the same old seedy, City of Angels underbelly, remixed for the cusp of a new decade. Its mirthful screams and bizzaro beat speak ("She drinks my wine spo-dee-o-dee") also marked one of Charmed Life's few memorable moments. "Cradle of Love" was another obvious high point; together with its saucy video the clattering, histrionic single was largely responsible for the LP's platinum status. But Steve Stevens had departed prior to Charmed, taking his pyrotechnic guitar with him, and ...
| | Girls With Guitars CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Bob Mould album
$16.39 To clear up some inevitable confusion right off the bat, this does not feature the same music as the 1989 LP compilation also titled Girls With Guitars, which came out on Impact, a subsidiary of Ace, the same label that put out the 2004 CD also titled Girls With Guitars [Ace]. The 1989 Impact LP bearing this title was devoted entirely to '60s female British acts, with the exception of Goldie & the Gingerbreads, an American band who were based in Britain in the mid-'60s. The 2004 Ace CD called Girls With Guitars [Ace] has 24 entirely different tracks, all of them by American-'60s girl groups, many (though not all) of whom played their own instruments. Goldie & the Gingerbreads appear on the 2004 Girls With Guitars [Ace] as well, but are represented by four mid-'60s tracks that don't appear on the 1989 Girls with Guitars LP. Got all that? Moving on to the music, it's okay and usually competent enough to avoid categorization as mere novelty. But it's not great -- it's mid-level period-'60s rock (actually from 1963-70), reflecting girl group, soul, British Invasion, and pop-rock trends of the day. Some of it has the raw guitar rock approach associated with garage rock, but not all of it does, by any means. Few will have heard of any of these acts, save perhaps Goldie & the Gingerbreads ...
