Possibly the most confrontational standup comic of his era, Bill Hicks perhaps was also the most confessional comic of his time. His rants are more like dissertations with jokes thrown in for good measure. On his first CD release from 1990, Dangerous, Hicks unleashes on the audience his thoughts about homelessness ("Modern Bummer"), smoking ("Smoking"), drugs ("The War on Drugs"), the state of rock & roll ("We Live in a World..."), and the decline of intellectualism ("Flying Saucer Tour") in late-'80s America. He also talks about his relationship with his family ("My Parents") and his fascination with pornography ("Please Do Not Disturb"). Hicks doesn't compromise with his audience. He is bound to offend just about anybody who listens to him, but for every offense taken, there are numerous philosophical truths he points out while simultaneously forcing his audience into convulsions of gut laughter. Dangerous sets the tone for the rest of his standup CDs. And while Dangerous may seem dark and cynical, it will seem optimistically sunny compared to what follows. ~ Brian Flota

Bill Hicks envisioned a big earthquake sending California into the ocean, leaving a place called Arizona Bay. When you hear how Hicks ridicules Los Angeles, you will think that Woody Allen's comments about Los Angeles in Annie Hall were compliments. Hicks extends his "comedy of hate" to Republicans ("The Elephant Is Dead") and fundamentalist Christians ("Dinosaurs in the Bible"). In "Marketing & Advertising," he urges everybody in his audience who is in marketing and advertising to "kill themselves." The punch line of the joke has Hicks talking as a marketer claiming, "he's going for that anti-marketing dollar, huge market." When Hicks isn't talking about politics or philosophical matters, he is telling the audience candid details about his private life. In "Clam Lappers & Sonic the Hedgehog," he talks about his emotional "arrested development," renting only pornos and video games from his local video store. This posthumous release culls material from 1992 performances as well as music he recorded, and even though from time to time the music is intrusive, it often works well with the jokes (especially on "The Elephant Is Dead"). Like his spiritual forefather, Lenny Bruce, the late Bill Hicks was a comedic visionary who used a profanity-laced approach in skewering societal sacred cows and made people simultaneously laugh and feel uncomfortable. Hicks' politically incorrect left-wing libertarian viewpoints saturate the posthumously released RANT IN E MINOR, where religious fundamentalism and politics are particular targets.
Delivered in an erudite twang, Hicks hilariously mocks Billy Ray Cyrus and Michael Bolton ("Fevered Egos"), PC extremists ("Non-smokers"), and wealthy celebrities (particularly Jay Leno) who deep-six their creative credibility by becoming corporate shills ("Artistic Roll Call"). The self-admitted "armchair psychologist" takes potshots at both the right ("Deficit [Jesse Helms], "Rush Limbaugh") and the left ("Waco," "One of the Boys [Clinton]) in a way that still reverberates years after the incendiary comic's passing. ...
