Was it that Zappa's music was so far ahead of its time, or was it just not what we thought a weirdo genius like him should be doing? Either way, since his death, his stature as a serious composer has grown. Lumpy Gravy missed most by a mile because it was the first of Zappa's 'challenging' orchestral pieces, and not what his audience had come to expect. Performed by the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, it was a lengthy instrumental suite broken up by equally 'challenging' dialogue. On the back cover, Frank looks out and asks, 'is this phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?'. No, we don't think so.

Recorded in February 1967.

Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Jim Haynes, Tommy Tedesco, Al Viola, Dennis Budimer (guitar); Ted Nash, John Rotella, Bunk Gardner, Gene Cipriano (woodwinds); Jimmy Zito (trumpet); Vincent De Rosa, Richard Parisi (French horn); Kenneth Shroyer (trombone); Paul Smith, Mike Lang, Pete Jolly (keyboards); John Balkin, Jimmy Bond, Lyle Ritts (bass); Johnny Guerin, Frankie Capp, Shelly Manne (drums); Emil Richards, Victor Feldman (percussion); Louie The Turkey, Spider, Pumpkin (background vocals).

Q (8/95, pp.150-151) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "A vibrant musique concrete collage spliced from bits of pop, Motorhead Sherwood's reminiscences of cars and girls, found sounds and exuberant avant-garde orchestral themes..."
Mojo (Publisher) (7/95, p.102) - "...a journey close to the centre of the Zappa mind. [LUMPY GRAVY] intercuts cheesy rock 'n' roll, orchestral avant-gardisms and snatches of demented babble from assorted Mothers of Invention and girlfriends..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.50) - Ranked #23 in Mojo's "The 50 Most Out There Albums Of All Time" - "Apparently Frank's favourite, LUMPY GRAVY is certainly a masterpiece. Of sorts."

5 stars Lumpy Gravy a work of eccentric genius
Frank Zappa's "Lumpy Gravy" is a breathtaking introduction to the serious side(such as it is) of Zappa's musical imagination. Long-time Zappa fans will notice certain familiar recurring things here - the use of the song "Oh No" from "Weasels Ripped my Flesh", the Varese-like musical moments in the more 'classical' passages, the musical parodies(surf music, advertising jingles, soundtrack music, etc.), the improvised dialogue as an expression of the more aleatoric side of his creativity(seen elsewhere at nearly self-indulgent lengths on his landmark release "Uncle Meat"), Zappa's mystical idea of all things springing from One Big Musical Note(stated quite explicitly here) and, of course, the off-centre sense of humour of the creator. Only Frank Zappa could have created this. It screams 'Frank' in every note, every bar. The more classical passages in this work make one wonder what Zappa might have done if he had devoted his whole life to classical music instead of dividing his creativity. And some of the humour here makes me (for one) laugh out loud. This one doesn't wear off for me. It is timelessly beautiful and funny. In a trivia note, jazz fans might notice that the legendary jazz musician Shelly Manne(himself a 'character' of note) is one of the musicians here. Zappa fans should hear this at least once. For those who are on Zappa's creative wavelength, it is like honey to a bee. Greg Cameron, Surrey, B.C., Canada

4 stars Maybe not entry-level, definitely part of the big scheme
Don't make this your first Zappa purchase, but if you've heard some of it already and are ready to jump into the deep end of what was really going on in his mind, give it a whirl. Thematically very strongly linked with his final CD, "Civilization Phaze III". Random dialog snippets, tape sounds and effects, orchestral pieces, deranged snorks, turkey laughter, absurdity compete for your attention. If you have ever wondered what "pedal depressed panchromatic resonance" is, this provides the answer. Frank does not perform on this CD.

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (guitar, keyboards, percussion, vocals); Ray Collins (vocals, harmonica, percussion); Elliot Ingber (guitar); Roy Estrada (bass, vocals); Jimmy Carl Black (drums, vocals). In 1966, when even the Doors and the Grateful Dead were still at a garage band level, Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention took great pride in being the ambassadors of freakdom. The hippie/flower power culture was just getting under way, but the Mothers' debut album found them already taking great delight in turning Aquarian imagery inside out. No starry-eyed rainbow people, the Mothers were the living incarnation of underground comics such as R. Crumb's Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: nasty, ugly, and ...

Additional personnel includes: Gary Kellgren (vocals); Eric Clapton. The early Zappa albums were treasured by the few and totally misunderstood by the majority. The brilliant SGT. PEPPER satire of the cover should have garnered extra sales, but no. Zappa's scathing wit homed in on modern middle-class America and West Coast hippies. ...

This 1970 release finds Zappa and band at the apex of their improvisational powers. CHUNGA'S REVENGE largely eschews both high concept and satire in order to focus on the considerable jamming expertise of Zappa and his cohorts. In its original LP form, the album was divided into two discrete halves. The first side consists of extended, largely instrumental pieces where Zappa and his musicians stretch out and show off their improv chops over relatively simple, often blues-based structures. The keyboard-based instrumental interlude "Twenty Small Cigars" provides an interesting semi-classical change of pace. Side two contains shorter, vocal-oriented numbers, with harmonies that draw on ...

Recorded between 1963 and 1968. Includes liner notes and song annotations by Cub Koda. With two discs, 52 songs and a 52-page book, this is a wonderful roller coaster ride through the vitally important Yardbirds catalog. Not only did guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page emerge from their ranks, but the group spearheaded a unique meld of blues and ferocious rock & roll. Formed in the era of British blues bands, the Yardbirds released a series of singles that gave them Top 40 clout. Though this hastened the exit of Clapton, who decried their abandonment of a purer strain of blues, it created some incendiary, forward-looking material anchored in one of the era's underrated rhythm sections. Flush with the experimentation that was fueling the era, there are countless treasures to be heard here. "I Can't Make Your Way" is a mix of skiffle, cowboy swagger, and infectious riffing. "He's Always There" is pre-psych fuzziness combined with cool background vocals and handclaps. And then of course, there are all the hits, richly mastered and delivering a hefty wallop. Those who worship at the Guitar God altar will have their prayers answered on July 17, when Rhino delivers The Yardbirds - Ultimate!, the first-ever collection to include tracks by the patron saints of guitar rock: Jeff Beck, ...
