(3 Customer Reviews)
Recorded live at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, Los Angeles, California on August 7, 1971.
Yet another live document of the early-'70s Mothers incarnation that included vocalists Flo and Eddie of the Turtles (FILLMORE EAST 1971 covers the same time period). JUST ANOTHER BAND is probably the closest Zappa and company ever came to putting music second to comedy. Naturally, the musicianship is stellar as usual, but extended instrumental passages are virtually non-existent, replaced by Flo and Eddie's harmonies, delivering some howlingly funny lyrics. The centerpiece is the (originally) side-long "Billy the Mountain," a comic conceptual tour de force. Over a complex, suite-like form that incorporates multiple time and dynamic changes, the Mothers tell the surreal story of a Mountain named Billy who walked like a man, and his conflicts with those pesky little humans. "Magdalena" offers a parody of Four Tops-style romantic devotional tunes, while "Call Any Vegetable" ranks among the finest food songs of the rock era (a surprisingly impressive distinction).

| Just Another Band From L.A. Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) I Bought It For Magdalena Magdelana is one of my favorites, Flo and Eddie were great with the Mothers. I saw this incarnation at Harpur College now SUNY at Binghamton. Frank was good enough to play there several times and I always liked Don Preston. But, Billy was a Mountain is a little silly. I thought so back then too
The album also has a sort of medley with Call Any Vegetable and also stuff from Uncle Meat. This was the last Zappa album I bought. I liked the second one, Uncle Meat and then Hot Ratz was really the peak I think:) Submitted by tdyno (Upstate NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A night at FZ's traveling improv circus. If FZ ever made a sequel to his 2nd record "Absolutely Free", this just might have been it. From "Billy The Mountain" (the close-to-half-hour epic to end all other epics) to "Dog Breath" (a tighter, rock version of a song from "Uncle Meat"), this is an album highlighted by its hilarious vaudeville-style lyrical improvisation (mostly from Mothers vocalists Flo 'n Eddie). "Eddie, Are You Kidding?" takes a hilarious stab at consumerism, "Call Any Vegetable" is a "buyer's update" of the "Absolutely Free" song of the same name, and "Magdalena"... well, let's just say there is some subject matter that most folks STILL won't touch decades later. An envelope-pusher, "Just Another Band From L.A." is recommended for those who enjoy the more comical (yet still musically intricate rock-based) side of FZ. One of Zappa's Best! I bought this album on 8-track back in 1972. Although my 8-track stereo and tapes were stolen over 30 years ago, the songs and lyrics have stuck with me throughout that time. I was happy to find it on CD. This is TRULY one of Zappa's best creations!!!!!!!!!!! Submitted by a reviewer (Reno, NV) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
