Arranger: Frank Zappa. Love it or hate it, Over-Nite Sensation was a watershed album for Frank Zappa, the point where his post-'60s aesthetic was truly established; it became his second gold album, and most of these songs became staples of his live shows for years to come. Whereas the Flo and Eddie years were dominated by rambling, off-color comedy routines, Over-Nite Sensation tightened up the song structures and tucked sexual and social humor into melodic, technically accomplished heavy guitar rock with jazzy chord changes and funky rhythms; meanwhile, Zappa's growling new post-accident voice takes over the storytelling. While the music is some of Zappa's most accessible, the apparent callousness and/or stunning sexual explicitness of "Camarillo Brillo," "Dirty Love," and especially "Dinah-Moe Humm" leave him on shaky aesthetic ground. Zappa often protested that the charges of misogyny leveled at such material missed out on the implicit satire of male stupidity, and also confirmed intellectuals' self-conscious reticence about indulging in dumb fun; however, the glee in his voice as he spins his adolescent fantasies can undermine his point. Indeed, that enjoyment, also evident in the silly wordplay, suggests that Zappa is throwing his juvenile crassness in the face of critical expectation, asserting his right to follow his muse even if it leads him into blatant stupidity (ironic or otherwise). One can read this motif into the absurd shaggy-dog story of a dental floss rancher in "Montana," the album's indisputable highlight, which features amazing, uncredited vocal backing from Tina Turner and the Ikettes. As with much of Zappa's best '70s and '80s material, Over-Nite Sensation could be perceived as ideologically problematic (if you haven't got the constitution for FZ's humor), but musically, it's terrific. ~ Steve Huey Combining rock and intricate, experimental jazz with biting social commentary and a healthy dose of juvenile humor, Zappa's music was never less than provocative and often quite challenging. He manages to be musically ambitious, ironic, scatological and just plain weird, often within the same song. If you're looking to dive into his voluminous oeuvre, 1973'S OVER-NITE SENSATION is a good place to start. Following a string of experimental, nearly instrumental releases, the record is about as accessible as Zappa gets, and features some of his catchiest, wittiest songs. Even with musicians such as George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty and several horn players, the album is more rock than jazz. Awash with references to tweezers, dental floss, dandruff, ponchos, poodles and dwarves, OVER-NITE SENSATION is laugh-out-loud funny. The opener, "Camarillo Brillo," which recounts a nutty sexual encounter, is full of intricate wordplay, and the more explicit "Dinah Moe Hum" surely delighted legions of brainy high school boys when it was released. The wonderfully demented "Dirty Love" belongs in the pantheon of great Zappa songs, as does "I Am the Slime," a hilariously astute, prescient take on couch-potato culture, decades before the term was coined.Q (8/95, pp.150-151) - 3 Stars - Good - "...vulgar songs of sleaze and dirty love done with pornographic gusto..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/95, p.102) - "...a rock album that demonstrates [Zappa's] vast production skills and ability to coax fine playing from the likes of Jean-Luc Ponty, George Duke and Ruth Underwood..." My first FZ album This is the one that introduced me to Zappa. Heard the album at a party, fell in love with it, bought it the next day. After that I bought another Zappa album every week until I had all of them. Highly recommended. Check out Jean-Luc Ponty's violin solo on "Fifty Fifty", or Frank's blistering guitar solos on "Zomby Woof". Submitted by Melron Hoover (Kansas USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Zappa's Hit! Montana. Listen to the solo over and over and over. Thrill to the upper and lower registers and the slide that connects them. Absolutely unbelievable nuance. Oh yes and the words are funny too. Submitted by a reviewer (Marin, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$20.65 31 rockabilly tracks from the vaults of Sun Records, feat. Glenn Honeycutt, Dick Penner, Gene Simmons, Jimmy Haggett, Jimmy Wages, Ray Harris, Roy Hall, James Wood +
This collection of '50s and '60s Rockabilly contains rare tracks from the vaults of Sun Records. Liner Note Author: Colin Escott. Illustrators: Colin Escott; Dave Travis; Hans Peter Zdrenka; R.A. Andreas; Bo Berglind; William Pittman. Photographers: Colin Escott; Dave Travis; Hans Peter Zdrenka; R.A. Andreas; Bo Berglind; William Pittman. Among reissue and archival labels, only Bear Family Records could get to Volume 14 of a series and not have purchasers begin to feel like the concept was getting milked a bit, along with their wallets. This particular collection, indeed, will prove nothing less than essential for fans of rockabilly or early rock & roll, as well as devotees of Sun Records, though the reasons may be a little more complicated than the title of this volume suggests at first glance. "Rockabilly from the Vaults of Sun Records" might prove deceptively unappealing to the casual purchaser, as there is no shortage of rockabilly sides from Sun Records to choose from on CD, and from perfectly respectable reissue labels apart fromBear Family -- but this 31-song CD is very different from those. And the key can be found in the wording -- the music is "from" the vaults of Sun Records, but much of it was never actually issued by the label. Rather, the songs here mostly represent material found in the Sun vaults that Sam Phillips never released, and demos by people who he never signed, for whatever reasons. So what we have is truly an alternate universe of artists and sounds, in the context of Sun -- people and music that mostly never made the cut but which, in theory, might have. And some should have -- Glenn Honeycutt, whose "Rock All Night" opens this CD, was obviously a serious talent with at least one song to match; and Dick Penner, who co-wrote "Ooby Dooby," very obviously had something more than enthusiasm and energy to offer, as proved by "Move Baby, Move." Jumpin' Gene Simmons is substantially less impressive here with "Pop and Mama," but Jimmy Haggett's "Rock Me Baby" could easily have charted in 1955 or 1956. Jimmy Wages' "Take Me (Garden of Evil)" is downright bizarre, a river of words and strangely contradictory sentiments running like rapids -- rapids that Wages barely traverses safely in his ...
