Unknown Contributor Roles: Frank Zappa; Terry Bozzio; Captain Beefheart. Bongo Fury captures Captain Beefheart aka Don Van Vliet with Frank Zappa during their brief reunion for a series of shows in the spring of 1975. This album is a pastiche of both live performances -- taken from two evenings at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, TX -- and studio recordings that were almost a year-and-a-half old. This is the last album to feature the highly technical jazz fusion of Mothers of Invention, whose roots can be traced back to 1973 circa Over-Nite Sensation. The live portions are highlighted by the latest addition to the band -- frenetic percussionist extraordinaire Terry "Ted" Bozzio, who would stay with Zappa for a majority of the '70s. Most Zappa enthusiasts either love or hate Bongo Fury. Much of the disparity has to do with the lack of the extended fusion-based instrumentals that had graced their predecessors One Size Fits All and Roxy & Elsewhere as much as it does with the inclusion of Captain Beefheart. Conversely, those consumers whose passions tend toward both Zappa and Captain Beefheart consider this disc as a mutual zenith. Either way, there is a little something for every element. The album plunges directly into the ballsy rocker "Debra Kadabra." Although the track is credited solely to Zappa, the schizophrenic animation given by Van Vliet is an inspired combination of singing and spoken word -- as might be delivered by an amphetamine-drenched preacher. Zappa and the Mothers give the multi-tempo song a full-throttled workout, which is met headlong with "Carolina Hard-Core Ecstasy." This track comes from Zappa's long tradition of "tales from the road" involving various encounters with female enthusiasts. The song also includes some fiery fretwork from Zappa during the waning moments. Additional stellar guitar work can be found on "Advance Romance," as the best elements of this particular band occur here. The track grooves with a force similar to that of "Florentine Pogen" from One Size Fits All and contains a memorable Napoleon Murphy Brock vocal. The song also features the most extended instrumental interaction on Bongo Fury, running at over 11 minutes. Likewise, the two Captain Beefheart penned spoken-word selections, "Sam With the Showing Scalp Flat Top" and "Man With a Woman Head," are key entries into his anthology of surrealistic prose. ~ Lindsay Planer Zappa and Beefheart were birds of a feather. Though each was fiercely individualistic, idiosyncratic and uncompromising, they both followed their own path of sophisticated wierdness so far that each was probably the only artist the other could relate to in terms of peerage. The pair had collaborated here and there many times, but BONGO FURY is their only album-length effort. Recorded at a 1975 Austin concert, this is esQ (8/95, pp.150-151) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "A live recording on which the usual Mothers style is given a rawer blues texture, courtesy of Beefheart's harp and Denny Walley's slide guitar..." Down Beat - 3.5 Stars - Very Good Frank Zappa Bongo Fury Songs Bongo Fury Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Their finest hour I can only agree with previous reviewers. This is Zappas finest hour as well as Beefheart's. This is as good as they could be and the balance between them are for this time only, perfect. It's an album that shows Zappas deep love for the Captains music and personallity, cause if you check out Zappas other albums from this period, you will discover that they are uninteresting compared to this one. Zappa has adapted his band to fit with Beefheart and since the musicians are brilliant it becomes absolutely magic. "Debra Kadabra" is maybe the best track they ever cut together, "Carolina Hardcore Ecstacy" is one of the tightest songs The Mothers ever recorded and ala the other tracks also has their own peculiar brand of humour, weirdness och musical brilliance.
If you can find it, also check out the (original) version of "The torture never stops" that was cut at the same time but didn't appear on an album until Zappa did his "You can't do that on stage anymore"-release.

Brilliant! an album of unparalleled genius. this masterpiece was recorded live in 1975
and features both zappa and beefheart at their best. zappa plays some of the most intense guitar solos of his career and is
beautifully supported by one of the best
mothers line-ups. beefheart also shines on
this collection of classic songs, providing
one of his most growling vocal performances
on debra kadabra. although every track is
excellent, the most outstandin cuts are:
"carolina hard-core ecstasy", "muffin man" and the hilarious "poofter's froth wyoming plans ahead". you haven't lived until you've
heard it. Submitted by a reviewer (sydney, australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
