Audio Remixer: Frank Zappa. Recording information: Record Plant, L.A. Director: Frank Zappa. Photographer: Gary Heery. Zoot Allures, released in October 1976, is mostly a studio album (there are some basic live tracks, as in the title track and "Black Napkins") featuring a revolving cast of musicians who, oddly, do not correspond to the ones pictured on the album cover (for instance, Patrick O'Hearn and Eddie Jobson did not contribute). Compared to previous releases like One Size Fits All, Roxy & Elsewhere, or even Over-Nite Sensation, and to upcoming ones such as Zappa in New York, Studio Tan, or Sheik Yerbouti, Zoot Allures sounds very stripped down to bare essentials. Zappa focused on limited instrumentation, lots of bass, and whispered vocals to create a masterpiece of dark, slow, sleazy rock. Except for the opening and closing numbers ("Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station" and "Disco Boy"), all the material is slow to medium tempo with Zappa delivering the closest he'll ever get to a crooner vocal performance. "The Torture Never Stops" is the highlight, ten minutes of suggestive lyrics, crawling riffs, searing solos, and female screams of pain. That song and "Disco Boy" became classic tracks; "Black Napkins" and "Zoot Allures" rate among the man's best guitar solos. Historical note: The album was first devised as a two-LP set and would have included "Sleep Dirt," "Filthy Habits," and "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution," which all also fit the mood. Although humor has not been completely evacuated, Zoot Allures comes through as a much more serious rock record. Yet, it is more than a transitional album; it represents one of Zappa's strongest accomplishments. ~ François Couture Among Zappa's grittier works, ZOOT ALLURES is a strong piece of mid-'70s work that focuses more on the interaction of Zappa and a small group that includes Terry Bozzio, Ruth Underwood and Roy Estrada, temporarily abandoning the jazzy, large-scale efforts of previous albums like ONE SIZE FITS ALL. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but all the disparate ingredients for a satisfying whole. There are simple, catchy rock tunes like "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station," "Ms. Pinky," a synth-led ode to a sexual toy, and "Disco Boy," which foreshadowed Zappa's hit "Dancing Fool." The lovely instrumental "Black Napkins" is among the prettiest compositions in Zappa's canon, highlighting his guitar work in an uncharacteristically restrained mode. The arguable centerpiece of the album is the epic-length "The Torture Never Stops." Sung by Zappa in his deepest, dirtiest, most ominous voice, the song recounts the tale of an evil monarch who does unspeakable things in the depths of his castle. Full of Zappa's bluesy guitar interjections, its one of the most deliciously unsavory things FZ ever committed to tape.Q (8/95, pp.150-151) - 3 stars - Good - "...dark, tortuous riffs and solos set to hyperkinetic flurries of Terry Bozzio's drums..." Frank Zappa Zoot Allures Songs Zoot Allures Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Zappa as hard rocker! This is, in the metal sense, the heaviest of Zappa's releases with several integral tracks. The album is, in some ways, a stripped down Zappa, but if you ever wonder what a harder-edged Zappa would sound like, this is the place to check it out. Oh, and there's beauty, too. All Pilgrims of Sound should check it out.... Submitted by Greg Cameron (Surrey, B.C., Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Black Napkins! I bought all the Frank Zappa CDs I own in a tiny little shop I was at in Nevada, and I am glad I did. This is Frank Zappa, in my opinion, in his prime as a guitarist, just listen to the songs "Black Napkins" and "Zoot Allures." Submitted by The 89 (Columbus, IN) Was This Review Helpful? | | Rosa Chance Well CD (2005)
Zoot Allures
$12.55 Rosa Chance Well mainstays Vanessa Downing and Dean Taormina claim to have been in Washington D.C. band Samuel in the early '90s. After that act folded the two formed Rosa Chantswell (notice the less obscure meaning of this proto-spelling) in 1995. Then...what? Well, we're talking about a "low-pro-file-lific" band here. A rumor that two songs were recorded in 1996 surfaces, although the songs never do. Time meanders along. Meanwhile Vanessa and Dean move to Boston. She does a stint in the undocumented all-girl pop combo The Good Furies, then joins The Wicked Farleys for the last year of their hallowed existence. Dean remains underground.Enter recording engineer Andy Hong, who helped mix the last Farleys album. He convinces them to record. And despite growing legions of non-believers, an album is born. Gavin McCarthy and Jeff Goddard, the rhythm section of Karate, join Rosa Chance Well. And much more is established. Pop sophistication and sureness of execution become the rules. Poetry and conversation emerge as the dialects. And emotionally the music of Rosa Chance Well comes to feel like a bracing hand on the shoulder, even as it finds the time to charm and shine.Rosa Chance Well's eponymous debut is super-engaging, sophisticated pop.
Personnel includes: Vanessa Downing, Dean Taormina, Jeff, Gavin, Chris Brokaw. Rosa Chance Well: Dean Taormina (vocals, guitars, electric bass, percussion); Vanessa Downing (vocals, guitars). Additional personnel: Chris Brokaw (guitar); Jeff Goddard (electric bass); Gavin McCarthy (drums). Although ex-Samuel members Dean Taormina and Vanessa Downing (also ex-Wicked Farleys) had been noodling around under the Rosa Chance Well moniker since 1996, they didn't commit their velvety, acoustic-based cocktail jazz to tape until 2001. The result is their self-titled Kimchee Records debut and its 11 gorgeous, almost painterly songs, each of which plays like a glimpse at an unfinished novel. Populated by crystal clear guitars and strong, unpretentious vocals (somewhat akin to Liz Phair if she could actually sing, rather than just talk-sing), the album never really drags or rocks out, it just sort of floats dreamily along in its own orbit. The one clear exception to this rule being the fuzzy, ...

Zoot Allures
$11.25 Personnel: Chris Whitley (vocals, guitar); Chris Whitley; Gwen Snyder (vocals, tambourine); Kenny Siegal (baritone, guitars, electric guitar, baritone guitar, background vocals); Susann Bürger (spoken vocals); Sean Balin (violin); Heiko Schramm (electric bass, background vocals); Brian Geltner (acoustic guitar, vibraphone, drums, background vocals); Tim Beattie (lap steel guitar, harmonica, background vocals). Audio Mixers: John Holbrook; Tom Schick. Recording information: Old Soul Studios (06/01/2005-06/05/2005). Photographers: Brian Geltner; Angelika Rinnhofer; William Ellison. One has to wonder if Reiter In is, in fact, the late Chris Whitley's last will and testament in terms of recordings. Done in the first three days of June, 2005 -- he was already ill -- this set was recorded in New York with a host of friends he called "the Bastard Club" on analogue tape. The band is large, the sound is immediate. The feel is loose, raw, dark, rocked-up, and in-your-face. Without trying to sound morbid, the feeling of death and mortality is everywhere. The word "reiter" means "horseman." There were no overdubs. The track ...
