Studio Tan is one of four albums culled from the ill-fated 1976 box set Läther and released by Warner Bros. without Frank Zappa having a word to say about the final product (including the horrible artwork). The 21-minute opener, "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary," is the culmination of Zappa's art of storytelling. A complex piece painstakingly assembled in the studio over three years, it allies the comedy rock of the Flo & Eddie era with the jazzy feel of The Grand Wazoo and the twisted prog rock of the 1973-1974 band. Yet, it is greater than the sum of its parts, proposing an unmatched musical narrative that makes "Billy the Mountain" the work of a child and amounts to a stunning synthesis of the man's influences, stylistic range, and studio techniques. Side two features an intentionally stupid pop song, "Lemme Take You to the Beach," and two instrumental pieces written a few years earlier. The personnel is for the most part the same as on Roxy & Elsewhere. For the CD reissue, Zappa tweaked a few things, starting with the song titles, wrongly understood by Warner at the time (for instance "Redunzel" became "RDNZL"). He also edited a couple of short bits out of "Peccary," but replaced the original fade-out by a legitimate finale. Studio Tan (along with Sleep Dirt) brings a sense of closure to Zappa's mid-'70s. If you like cartoon music and silly stories, it is worth your money for "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" alone. ~ François Couture
When STUDIO TAN first appeared in 1978 it was in a rapid barrage with three other titles (SLEEP DIRT, ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES and LIVE IN NEW YORK) which served to fill and end Frank Zappa's contractual obligations to his then-label, Warner Brothers. The four pieces that make up this work have since been reconfigured by Zappa back into his once-slated 4-record set, LATHER (released posthumously as a 3-CD set).
"The Adventures Of Gregory Peccary," at twenty minutes, constitutes half of the album and is a monumental work of story-telling with diverse compositional and arrangement figures. It touches on musical themes found throughout much of Zappa's other work up to that time. Bits of surf music fly by trailed by symphonic fanfares. "Revised Music For Guitar And Low-Budget Orchestra" is an abbreviated and reworked version of a piece originally composed as a feature for the violin (and premiered on Jean-Luc Ponty's KING KONG album).

4 stars Yet Another Masterpiece
You can't go wrong with this one. "Studio Tan" follows "Hot Rats", "Waka/Jawaka" and "The Grand Wazoo" in a line of BRILLIANT jazz/rock/fusion masterpieces. But musical intricacies are also mixed in here with the great social commentary and mild surrealism of "The Adventures of Greggary Peccary" and the surfer parody of "Let Me Take You To The Beach". With top-notch musicianship and more than a touch of lyrical whimsy, this set is highly recommended!

Something for every kind of FZ fan here; humour and surrealism (G.Peccary), froth (Lemme Take You to the Beach)and nostalgia (Revised Music....). I was pleased to see that they added the faded-out end to 'Gregory Peccary'on the CD version, that they criminally left out on the original vinyl. Good stuff.

Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. The Beatles always stood apart from their peers, a self-evident statement that sadly extended to the treatment of their catalog in the digital age. Where all their contemporaries from the Byrds to the Who have had their catalogs remastered and reissued in deluxe editions, sometimes several times, the Beatles remained stuck in the early days of digital, their 14 albums plus PAST MASTERS singles collections remaining untouched since 1987. The 2009 reissue campaign ...

When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's ...

The duo's debut album on CD for the first time ever! Features the original artwork, new liner notes & 3 bonus tracks: 'It's The Little Things', 'Don't Talk To Strangers' & 'Hello'. Originally released on Atco in 1965, it now features a total of 15 tracks, also including their #1 smash 'I Got You Babe', plus the hits 'Just You' & 'The Letter'. 1998 Sundazed release. Personnel: Sonny Bono, Cher (vocals); Donald Peake, Monte Dunn, Steve Mann, Barney Kessel (guitar); Don Randi, Harold Battiste (piano); Michel Rubini (harpsichord); Frank Capp, Hal Blaine (drums); Gene Estes, Brian Stone (percussion).
Liner Note Author: Ken Sharp.
Recording information: Gold Star Studios, Hollywood, CA.
Arranger: Sonny Bono.
For their first album-length excursion in the wake of "I Got You Babe," Sonny & Cher don't tread too far outside the influence of Phil Spector, including covers of "Unchained Melody," "Then He Kissed Me," and "Why Don't They Let Us Fall in Love," of which the latter shows off the most appealing elements of each singers' voice. "It's Gonna Rain," which Ahmet Ertegun favored over "I Got You Babe," is a sub-Rascals attempt at white electric soul, while "500 Miles" is Spectorized folk-rock that Sonny carries for one verse and a chorus longer than he should have. The three bonus cuts are as valuable as anything off the original album -- "It's the Little Things" and "Don't Talk to Strangers" (not the Beau Brummels tune) are both throwbacks to a slightly older Spector sound, without as much concession to the folk-rock influences of 1965 as the album material. "Hello" is a B-side on which they simply talk, George Burns & Gracie Allen-style, in a distant precursor ...
