Audio Remasterer: Bob Stone. Recording information: 1974-1976. Unknown Contributor Role: Frank Zappa. Arranger: Frank Zappa. Sleep Dirt was never conceived as a stand-alone album. Five of its seven tracks were suppose to appear on the ill-fated 1976 box set Läther; three had been recorded for Zoot Allures but were shelved after Zappa decided to trim it down from a double to a single LP; finally, three had been written as part of the abandoned musical Hunchentoot. Zappa pieced the album together from these various discarded parts. "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution" (one of the leftovers from Zoot Allures) is now considered to be one of his finest instrumental rock pieces. Upon its original release, this LP was Zappa's first 100 percent instrumental record. On the CD reissue, the three Hunchentoot songs, "Flambay," "Spider of Destiny," and "Time Is Money," were given their vocal parts back (performed by Thana Harris). As infuriating as this was for purists, these latter versions are undeniably closer to what the composer had in mind. The same does not apply to Chad Wackerman's new drum tracks for "Regyptian Strut," recorded in the midst of the infamous tamperings of such classic LPs as We're Only in It for the Money and Cruising With Ruben & the Jets. A strange mixture of the gloomy atmosphere of Zoot Allures and more theatrical (even cabaret-like in the case of "Flambay") writing, Sleep Dirt is somewhat sweet and sour. There are strong guitar solos, but the whole thing lacks panache (and the cover artwork is truly awful). This item remains more for the completist than the newcomer. ~ François Couture The material on this album originally was intended to be part of a four-record set called Läther, prepared for release in 1977. Then Frank Zappa got into a disagreement with his record company, Warner Bros., and Läther was split up into several different releases as part of a contractual agreement. The results were dumped on the market during 1978 and 1979, while Zappa moved on to his own record label. Sleep Dirt consists of miscellaneous tracks recorded between 1974 and 1976, including "Flambay," "Spider Of Destiny," and "Time Is Money," songs that apparently were part of an unissued Zappa musical/rock opera from 1972 called Hunchentoot. They are sung by soprano Thana Harris. It's impossible to say what the entire work would have been like, but this album is little more than musical fragments. ~ William Ruhlmann Always a prolific, restless artist, Frank Zappa was constantly recording. The songs on his 1979 release SLEEP DIRT, which stem from as early as 1974, were originally intended for release on a planned four-platter package, but when the record company balked, they were eventually issued separately. Drawing on the talents of such stalwart accompanists as George Duke, Ruth Underwood, and Terry Bozzio, SLEEP DIRT is an intricate, multi-textured record. Initially all instrumental, the CD version was released with soprano vocalist Thana Harris on three tracks. SLEEP DIRT opens with "Filthy Habits," a minor-key, somewhat Spanish-sounding workout. The stately, keyboard-dominated "Flambay" follows, with tinkling marimbas and lyrical bass work, sequing into "Spider of Destiny." | Sleep Dirt Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Loved the original vinyl! I have to admit I was a little deflated when I bought the remastered CD and had to 'listen through' the vocals on most of the songs to hear the musiacl prowess of lord Zappa. I wished I had better preserved the vinyl that I wore through in high school! But, regardless Sleep Dirt is valid musical genius in either form. Maybe I will get a personal concert from the master himself when I get to heaven! Submitted by Carol Ann (San Diego, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Instrumentally..... I can't say I've ever heard the totally instumental version, but I think I need to. I don't care for the vocals at all, and prefer to usually skip those tracks, although the music behind the vocals has at times caught my attention. The tracks that are purely instrumental are great, with the first and last songs being pure Zappa genius!

Flambay... What do you mean ? I did not know of the original instrumental album. I heard first the "ruining vocals" one....
I think exactly the opposite. No way to listen to Flambay without that fantastic singer ! She rules, at least on this song (and Time is money too). I am not fond of singers and 90% of what I listen is instrumental, but you should not be so "integrist", I still do not understand how the singing part of Flambay can be bashed........??? Instrumental FZ at his best... Having been a FZ fan for many years, I would have to say that Sleep Dirt is one of my favorite albums. As for the CD, well...I wasn't too thrilled to hear vocals on several of the tracks when I purchased that version a few years back. I'm not sure what ol' Frank was thinking when he decided to do that, but I still have to respect his diverse ways. Guess that's what's always made his music so interesting. I'm glad I've got it on vinyl though. As far as I'm concerned...it's a collector's item! Submitted by alvarado621 (Albany, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
GREAT! BUT.... THE VOCALS RUIN THIS CD! THE VINYL AND THE TAPE WERE 100% INSTRUMENTAL. THE BARKING PUMKIN SHOULD GIVE ZAPPA FANS A CHOICE! BUY THE ORIGINAL GREAT INSTRUMENTAL OR BUY THIS DISMAL VOCAL RENDITION. Submitted by vcalbat (ANAheim, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Arranger: Andy Chase . Ivy's Dominique Durand and Andy Chase hold up their elegant indie pop stride for just a moment so that Paco's foxy strut can catch up. This Is Where We Live is a rock record. Of course Chase's signature studio tweaking is up to par and exactly polished. Durand's sophisticated vocal style couldn't be any more clear and crisp, so the dynamic that is This Is Where We Live is fully fashioned with temptation and mystery, and free of Ivy's classic pop sweetness. ...
| | T Rex Born To Boogie CD (2005) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan; + Bonus CD
Sleep Dirt
$55.35 This double-CD set is an unexpected bonus for fans of the Ringo Starr-directed Marc Bolan/T. Rex documentary Born to Boogie. The movie is due out on DVD, but the release of a soundtrack is simply an amazing piece of icing on the cake. Filmed and recorded in early 1972, just as T. Rex had made the leap to the upper reaches of pop stardom, the double-CD set caught Bolan and company at the peak of their musicianship and at a loose, high moment where everything seemed possible -- hence the acoustic guitar/string quartet medley of hits, the Marc Bolan/Ringo Starr/Elton John rendition of "Tutti Frutti," and the string of more conventionally scored performances of "Jeepster" and most of the rest of Bolan's repertoire that are there to enjoy on the first CD. And then there's the second disc, recorded live at the Wembley in March of 1972. Between Apple Films' eventual collapse (along with the rest of the Beatles' music empire) and the fact that T. Rex were never remotely as popular on this side of the Atlantic as they were in England, Americans scarcely ever heard about the movie, much less saw it. This two-disc set now makes it much more than just the movie, with excellent sound and a unique body of music to be enjoyed simply as audio entertainment. It's all great fun as well as a superb example of the best of glam/glitter ...
