| | Frank Zappa Orchestral Favorites CD Frank Zappa Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES contains five symphonic works written by Frank Zappa, performed by Zappa himself and his mid-'70s rhythm section with a full orchestra. Recorded at the Royce Hall in Los Angeles in 1975, ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES is similar to Zappa's other symphonic works (parts of BURNT WEENY SANDWICH, 200 MOTELS, etc.). The album was not released until four years later however, due to a skirmish with Warner Bros. Zappa wanted to release a three-record set entitled LATHER, which was to include material from ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES plus the other late-'70s releases SLEEP DIRT and STUDIO TAN. But Warner Bros. forced him to release the complete work as separate albums (LATHER did finally appear as a three- disc set in 1996).
New versions of "Duke of Prunes" (originally on 1967's ABSOLUTELY FREE) and "Strictly Genteel" (from 1971's 200 MOTELS) can be found here, as well as the lengthy album closer "Bogus Pomp," which also contains material previously found on 200 MOTELS. Also included is the brief composition "Naval Aviation In Art?" and the abstract "Pedro's Dowry." For those interested in discovering Zappa as symphonic composer and arranger, ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES is highly recommended.
Recorded at Royce Hall, Los Angeles, California in September 1975.
Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (guitar); Michael Zearott (conductor); Dave Parlato (bass); Terry Bozzio (drums); Emil Richards (percussion).

| Orchestral Favorites Music Orchestral Favorites Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) One of FZ's best "Orchestral Favorites" presents Frank Zappa's "classical" experiments at it's apex. The arrangements, orchestrations and performances are tight and played with the humor so closely associated with FZ's "rock bands". Great care was taken in the actual recording and mixing of this music and the listener is treated to wide array of timbres and specific left and right pannings. There is never a dull moment. The choice of material is excellent and thoroughly "Zappa" in approach. One of the most striking things about this CD is Zappa's genius for juxtaposition of musical styles, and of course many parodies abound. Strauss waltzes, Rite Of Spring rhythms, Boleros, 12 tone excerpts, Webernesque String Arrangements, Varese-Electronique, Broadway, Scarey Movie Music etc...It's non stop fun. The CD also contains FZ playing some wicked idiosyncratic guitar (hints of "Zoot Allures") on the tastefully orchestrated "Duke Of Prunes". A thrilling performance.
Now some critics have been hard on Zappa because of his penchant for writing complex dissonant melodies. But in many cases if you listen a few times you will hear that they have a memorable flavor to them - you just have to expand your listening palette and memory. In this CD we are treated to some of Frank's most charming and playful melodies. Check out the sweet, expressive tune played by the harmonica on "Strictly Genteel", or the sneaky melody played by the trombone and violin in the hilarious "Pedro's Dowery". The existential wedges in "Naval Aviation In Art" are chilling, not to mention so many robust, dynamic moments in "Bogus Pomp".
Zappa was a master of form. Even in complex pieces such as these the form is clear and believe it or not, it's still pop! This makes for a totally enjoyable album that should be in everyone's collection. It will open up your mind to check out all the other great 20th century work Frank drew from as well as his own musical universe.
Wonderful stuff with a sense of humor from an artist who lived to create art. Submitted by John (Stony Brook, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Orchestral Favorites album
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, a documentary called 400 Days shot during the Wildflowers tour -- a Blu-Ray edition of all 62 tracks on the five-CD version, a vinyl copy of the 1976 Official Live 'Leg LP, plus a book and lithograph, along with other assorted bonuses. Certainly, the deluxe edition lives up to its billing, offering enough extras to justify its price ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Orchestral Favorites CD music
$11.17 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly seductive and somewhat irresistible, and it's easy to see why the ladies love cool John. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition
Orchestral Favorites CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies ...

Since Paul Kantner reorganized Jefferson Starship in 1991 following the demise of Starship, this is the most ambitious recording the band has undertaken. The unit, also featuring Kantner's long-term partner, Marty Balin, with whom he formed Jefferson Airplane in 1965, is a seasoned group also boasting guitarist Slick Aguilar, who has been with the principals since their 1985 manifestation as the KBC Band, and drummer Prairie Prince, who has been ...

Orchestral Favorites music CDs
$11.19 Huntsville, AL, band Daikaiju (which means "giant monster" in Japanese) came along to put their stamp on instrumental surf music 40 years after the style first became popular. The band has been building up a following for several years, but this self-titled effort is its first full-length CD. On it, the sound of Duane Eddy and the Ventures rides again, as pseudonymous guitarists Secret Asian Man and Dymaxion Lee twang and chime through original instrumental tunes that could have accompanied surfing footage in the early '60s, with the rhythm section of bassist Brain Conflict and drummer Mr. Nein charging the beats. For the most part, this is rigorously formulaic, the only slight change in approach appearing ...
