You Are What You Is was another of Frank Zappa's periodic post-Over-Nite Sensation efforts that concentrated on tight songwriting supported by satirical lyrics. Originally a two-record set featuring 20 songs, You Are What You Is skewered a variety of targets, from teenagers, punk rock, disco, and country music to the media, yuppies, the beauty-and-fitness industry, upper-class vice, religious hypocrisy, suicide, and the military draft -- all the trappings of Reagan-era America. Occasionally, Zappa's satirical points seem ill-thought-out, if not unnecessarily malicious; "Jumbo Go Away" is perhaps the most offensive song in Zappa's huge canon of potentially offensive songs, a tale of a whining, VD-riddled groupie who is portrayed as deserving the punch in the face she gets from an irritated musician. Despite that misstep, though, You Are What You Is is quite ambitious in scope and in general one of Zappa's most accessible later-period efforts; it's a showcase for his songwriting skills and his often acute satirical perspective, with less of the smutty humor that some listeners find off-putting. ~ Steve Huey YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS was Zappa's first album to feature vocals since the 1979 classic JOE'S GARAGE. Perhaps to make up for lost time, a variety of vocalists are featured throughout--Ike Willis, Ray White, Frank's daughter Moon and son Ahmet, Jimmy Carl Black, and of course, Zappa himself. Also of note is that YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS marks the fist appearance on a Zappa record by future guitar hero Steve Vai (who would later reach rock star status via short stints in the David Lee Roth band and Whitesnake). Like almost all of Zappa's other albums, YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS is a hodgepodge of different musical styles--country & western ("Harder Than Your Husband"), reggae ("Goblin Girl"), gospel ("Heavenly Bank Account"), and warped rock n' roll ("Dumb All Over"). Also included is the popular, funky title track (one of Zappa's few music videos), and a pair of tracks that show Zappa's sense of humor hadn't dulled during his year-long break from releasing records ("Teen-Age Wind" and "Conehead"). Frank Zappa You Are What You Is Songs You Are What You Is Music You Are What You Is Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) reply in response to michaels reveiew hes right this isnt the best musical zappa album, this is rather a lyrical comedic zappa. If you want to listen to some great compositions or (in michaels case) guitar work listen to Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, or Chungas Revenge. These, in my opinion, are his best albums.

From a not-so-huge Zappa fan This is only my second Zappa purchase. It is about what I expected but still I don't see the guitar artistry that makes his reputation. If you're a Zappa fan, you'll probably love it. The lyrics are truly cooky. And it is a double-album on one CD. Submitted by Michael (Rocky Mount, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A good introduction to FZ. With a musical career spanning from classical music to doo-wop it's hard to know where to start if you wish to penetrate the phenomena of Frank Zappa.
This album is a good place to start with a Frank Zappa in almost easy-listening mode (at least by his standards). It even contains a country song called "Harder than your husband". The second half of the album is a collection of 9 songs linked together to a single story which I like to call a small rock opera.
The album also contains some of FZ's most memorable critical lyrics, especially his critisism of TV-evangelists in "Heavenly Bank Account".
Personally I consider this to be the last FZ album to contain a high musical quality through all of the songs. The albums following after this one may contain several good songs but are more un-even in their quality. Submitted by paul.ahlgren (Stockholm, Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Audio Mixers: John Agnello; Ted Young. Recording information: Atomic Studios, New York, NY; Water-Music Recorders, Hoboken, NJ. Photographer: Marina Chavez. The Strokes' breakthrough of the early 2000s made indie rock safe for unabashed retro stylings, and no band embraced this ethos more than Brooklyn's the Hold Steady. Synonymous with "throwback" and "bar band," their excellent debut heralded the return of spirited, no-frills rock. Whereas that record brilliantly fused indie aesthetics with the blue-collarisms of Springsteen and Thin Lizzy, BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA, their third full-length and Vagrant debut, finds them getting away from indie rock for a full-blown Springsteen fixation. The whole record echoes the piano-driven orchestral bombast of BORN TO RUN particularly on the opening track, "Stuck Between Stations" (read: "Thunder Road") and the drunken ballad "First Night" (read: "Backstreets"). It doesn't help matters that Craig Finn's throat-and-guts yowl recalls the Boss's more than ever. The difference comes with the lyrics: while Springsteen's offer hope in the face of despair, Finn's wallow in parties that aren't fun anymore, mixed signals and missed opportunities with women, and chemical crutches. The latter figure prominently, and Finn's raw talent for barstool poetics--like "some nights the painkillers make the pain even worse" from "Chips Ahoy"--is unmatched. Finn's undeniable talent positions him--despite his idolatry--less as his generation's Springsteen and ...
