Recording information: UMRK & Concert Recordings. Unknown Contributor Roles: Frank Zappa; Craig Stewart; Marty Krystall; Arthur Barrow. Arranger: Frank Zappa. This album presents a mix of studio tracks and altered live recordings from Frank Zappa's hard rock period. The tone is definitely less rock-oriented than on Them or Us, only "Stick Together" and "Cocaine Decisions" qualifying as such. The most noticeable trend here is the half-spoken half-sung free-form numbers "The Radio Is Broken," "The Dangerous Kitchen," and "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats." They all feature Zappa performing a written text or improvising one on the spot, speech-singing while the band wallops around, reacting to his words. A few instrumental tunes round out the set, including the superb "Moggio" and "Tink Walks Amok," with Arthur Barrow playing multiple bass parts. The album's title comes from a '50s song, included ("The Man From Utopia Meets Mary Lou [Medley]"), while the cover artwork alludes to an infamous Italian tour in 1982 plagued by mosquitoes and riots. There exists two different CD versions of this album. All reissues of the original 1983 LP in digital format before 1992 present a slightly remixed version. Post-1992 CDs feature an extensive remix, the track list has been modified, a bonus track added ("Luigi & The Wise Guys"), and different drum tracks recorded in the mid-'80s by Chad Wackerman have replaced the original live ones in "The Dangerous Kitchen" and "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats." Despite of these changes, The Man From Utopia retains the cold digital sound of Zappa's albums around this time but is more varied and engaging than Them or Us. ~ François Couture By the '80s, Frank Zappa became known as a genius who hid a social conscience behind a biting sense of humor. No matter how crude the lyrics were, he was always making a point. Occasionally, however, he did like to just make a silly record, and THE MAN FROM UTOPIA is mighty silly. On "The Radio Is Broken," he roasts those really bad sci-fi movies that inhabit late night TV. "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats" tells what we can only hope is a fictional groupie story over free-jazz backing. Zappa could even write a funny instrumental, picking a baritone sax to handle the melody on "We Are Not Alone." UTOPIA also features an up-and-coming Steve Vai who had the unenviable task of transcribing and then doubling Zappa's vocal part on "The Dangerous Kitchen" and "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats." | Man From Utopia Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Palermo or bust... I did not find out until years later that the cover of this album alluded to the concert in Palermo, that is captioned on one of the YCDTOS's in Cocaine Decisions...another must, among so many, if not all, for the collector...Moggio, what a tune!!! Funny sheeit This album was a classic in college, I can still enjoy most of it. Submitted by skiggity (New York, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One Of His Best This is possibly Frank Zappa's most commercial album. "Cocaine Decisions" and "We Are Not Alone" are both highly commercial. Maybe that's why some Zappa fans don't like it.
I find the satirical wit of FZ as evident here as anywhere:
"And the cocaine decision that you made today will mean nothing later on ...
when you get nose decay."
"Some girls try it and go on a diet,
Then they worry 'cause they's too fat,
Who wants to ride on an ironing board?
That ain't no fun, I tried me one!"
etc
There are a few more traditional Zappa jazz xylophone type instrumentals like "Moggio" and jazz/funk like "Tink Walks Amok" and despite what some other reviewer may have said each song is quite different stylistically.
The album is varied and interesting and a real showcase of the many styles of Frank.
I love this album!
For me it is one of his best. Submitted by Warren Mars (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mary Lou meets Ranxerox No guitar solos, political incorrectness, doo-wop meltdown stravaganzas, 50`s rock, panty sniffing and a couple of dynamic instrumentals. A great album. Submitted by Rne (Malaver, Argentina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel: Rivers . Audio Mixer: Rich Costey. Words such as "goofy" and "geeky" have long been used to describe Weezer's music, but these qualities are only one aspect of the band's sound; beneath all the humorous pop culture references and snarky attitude, Rivers Cuomo touched upon a myriad of serious topics including existential angst, aging, and sexual mores. While at first listen RADITUDE seems to be ...

| | Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost CD (2009)
Man From Utopia songs
$11.35 (MP3 Available for Download) Audio Mixer: Jason Lader. If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests ...

Man From Utopia album
$9.05 Litter/Rising Storm/Lazy Smoke Flat Earth Society/Lucia Pamel
Various Artists: The Beagles, 31 Flavors, The Lovin' Sandwich, Pat Farrell, The Electras . The Arf! Arf! line focuses mostly on 1960s (and occasionally 1970s) garage bands that are obscure even by the standards of this over-anthologized genre. It also takes in weird amateurish cult records and experimental, idiosyncratic rock (sometimes in projects including label head Erik Lindgren himself). Released in commemoration of its 20th anniversary, this might at first glance look like the kind of label sampler-cum-advertisement that few would seriously consider buying. You'd be wrong, however, because in a refreshing exception to custom, none of these 50 tracks were previously available on CD, and many were previously unreleased in any form. This in turn isn't necessarily as exciting as it sounds, since a good ...
| | Heikki 2 CD (2005)
Man From Utopia CD music
$12.49 Heikki, the collaboration between the Concretes' Maria Eriksson and producer Jari Haapalainen, is virtually a Swedish indie pop mini-supergroup. Their first full-length (and Stateside debut) Heikki 2 shows off the duo's unique mix of '60s pop, folk and country influences. Initially, the way the album switches between sugar-buzz pop and pastoral ballads seems a little jumbled, but with repeat listens, it feels more eclectic than scattered. Eriksson's sweet-but-strong vocals, aided and abetted by Ellekari "The Tiny" Larsson and Tove Leander's backing harmonies, hold Heikki 2 together despite its stylistic shifts. Eriksson and Haapalainen have affection and understanding for early-'60s pop that is second to none, as well as an understanding of how to adapt it into something that sounds fresh and timeless all ...

Man From Utopia music CDs
$15.89 (MP3 Available for Download) Scritti Politti: Green Gartside. For his first album since 1999's hip-hop-inspired ANOMIE & BONHOMIE, Green Gartside (aka Scritti Politti) returns to his original home on the seminal Rough Trade label for 2006's WHITE BREAD BLACK BEER. The album is much closer in style to the mellifluous pop of the 1981 single "The Sweetest Girl" than the agit-prop funk-punk of the band's early incarnations or the Michael Jackson worship of CUPID & PSYCHE '85. Gartside's lilting near-falsetto croon--particularly on the lightly shuffling Beach Boys-esque "Snow In the Sun"--is at the center of this refined pop confection; however, Scritti Politti is never far from the dancefloor, and WHITE BREAD BLACK BEER is steeped in sporty grooves and electronica flourishes--from burbling synths to buoyant electro-rock to wry references to rap and contemporary R&B. One of the most enigmatic pop records released in 2006, Gartside has made an album that is as curious ...
