Released in 1988, Guitar may be the most important and ironically one of the least-known entries in Frank Zappa's voluminous discography -- which spans over seven-dozen LPs as of this writing. His proficiencies as a composer and instrumentalist have long been lauded. However, anthologies of this nature provide an outlet for the remarkable breadth and depth of Zappa's manual dexterity and improvisational scope, which can now be enjoyed on a myriad of levels. The casual enthusiast can revel in the seemingly endless personas and sounds summoned from the soloist and band alike. Devotees of the artist and/or instrument are presented with example upon example of Zappa's ability to create masterworks on the fly and often in the context of larger pieces. For example, "Which One Is It?" is an extraction from "The Black Page" in Munich, Germany, on June 26, 1982. Compare it to the likes of "Move It or Park It," which was likewise lifted from "The Black Page" two weeks earlier in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 11, 1982. Caveat emptor to those following the liner notes, as they are wrought with inaccurate dates. Interestingly, whenGuitar was prepped for CD, several of the mixes were altered. So, the original two-LP set -- despite containing 13 fewer cuts -- is preferred by some. That minutia aside, simply listening to Zappa as a primary player is always a treat for inclined parties and there are a few exceptional selections scattered throughout. "For Duane" -- a nod to fellow stringman Duane Allman -- is made all the more poignant for having been played before a (kinda) hometown crowd in Atlanta, GA, November 25, 1984. Other standouts include a pair of Joe's Garage-related cuts: "Outside Now" -- dating back to March of 1979 -- and the emotional immediacy infused into "Watermelon in Easter Hay," the latter taken from a Jones Beach show on August 16, 1984. On the whole, Guitar joins the Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar trilogy as a key component in unraveling the endless enigma of Frank Zappa as a major fretmeister. ~ Lindsay Planer Frank Zappa's 1988 release GUITAR is the follow-up to his 1986 guitar solo smorgasbord, SHUT UP N' PLAY YER GUITAR. Like it's predecessor, GUITAR is a double-disc set comprised of in-concert Zappa guitar solos (some were taken from actual songs, others are between-song improvisation). All of the solos have been seamlessly edited together, so the entire set plQ (8/95, pp.150-151) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...130 minutes of guitar solos....the listener is again the winner." | Guitar Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Dapper Zappa Zappas referencing of titties, sex, bodily functions and emissions grew tiring over the course of his many releases. Especially for a lot of fans of his work who lived outside of the US not subjected to the religious fundamentalism and censorship he wrote about often. The rants wore a little thin. His guitar playing was another matter. This album and it's twin Shut Up and Play Your Guitar are testament to the fluid beauty of Franks playing. Always fresh and inventive. If only he'd have shut up and played a little more guitar. Submitted by Foof, titty in one hand, beer in the other. (Horsley. N.S.W. Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Shut up and listen to this guitar some more Zappa was an incredible guitar player, no doubt about that. This double CD set features a subtantial quantity of live solos. Many of them are taken from the same songs, but from different gigs, and the differences between them are drastic. Zappa didn´t play the same old solo every night. He composed new things live on stage, he took a chance, he improvised. Free guitar rock? I´m not fond of genres names, but that could be a suitable one. $15.30 Personnel: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals); Richie Sambora (guitar, background vocals); Charlie Judge, Charles Judge (strings, keyboards); David Bryan (keyboards); Hugh McDonald (bass guitar); Tico Torres (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Bob Clearmountain. Recording information: Henson Recording Studios, CA; Sanctuary Studios, NJ. Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the process, THE CIRCLE, the band's fifth studio effort of the `00s, is a back-to-roots return to form focused on uplifting hooks and a hard-hitting guitar rock energy. Once again teaming up with producer John Shanks, who also worked the band's previous two albums, Bon Jovi relay the struggles and upheavals of the common man on lead single "We Weren't Born to Follow."

Anthrax: Joe Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (acoustic & electric guitars); Scott Ian (guitar); Frank Bello (bass); Charlie Benante (drums). Personnel: Joey Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (guitar); Frank Bello (bass guitar); Charlie Benante (drums). Audio Remasterer: Gavin Lurssen. Liner Note Author: Brian Posehn. Photographer: Waring Abbott. Generally considered the band's best album, Among the Living broadened the scope of Anthrax's subject matter with socially conscious lyrics addressing prejudice, violence, drug abuse ("Efilnikufesin [N.F.L.]," a rip on John Belushi), and the hollowness of the music business, as well as a politically correct ode to the "Indians." However, the band refuses to take itself too seriously, also recording tributes to Stephen King and Judge Dredd. Musically, the band delivers a powerful, aggressive roar driven by impossibly fast riffing and the changing tempos and collectively shouted vocals of hardcore, especially on the classic "Caught in a Mosh." The brutal rhythm guitar work of Scott Ian and the explosive drumming of Charlie Benante relentlessly push the songs along while still maintaining a solid groove, and more than make up for some lyrical awkwardness. Among the Living remains arguably Anthrax's foremost achievement. ~ Steve Huey When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre ...

The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. The Stones forsook psychedelic experimentation to return to their blues roots on this celebrated album, which was immediately acclaimed as one of their landmark achievements. A strong acoustic Delta blues flavor colors much of the material, particularly "Salt of the Earth" and "No Expectations," which features some beautiful slide guitar work. Basic rock & roll was not forgotten, however: "Street Fighting Man," a reflection of the political turbulence of 1968, was one of their most innovative singles, and "Sympathy for the Devil," with its fire-dancing guitar licks, leering Jagger vocals, African rhythms, and explicitly satanic lyrics, was an image-defining epic. On "Stray Cat Blues," Jagger and crew began to explore the kind of decadent sexual sleaze that they would take to the point of self-parody by the mid-'70s. At the time, though, the approach was still fresh, and the lyrical bite of most of the material ensured Beggars Banquet's place as one of the top blues-based rock records of all time. ~ Richie Unterberger Retreating from the psychedelia of THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, the Stones released the roots-rock single "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and ...
| | Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost CD (2009)
Guitar
$11.35 Audio Mixer: Jason Lader. If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When the setting is spartan, her voice is haunting and gripping, wrenching out operatic emotions, but GIVE UP THE GHOST trumps THE STORY because Carlile allows herself to lighten up too, to rock again on "Dreams" and jump into the rollicking "Caroline," which does indeed recall the barrelhouse jaunt of HONKY CHATEAU. Carlile still prefers sobriety to levity but it never feels affected; it's music that gets under your skin and cuts to the bone. Angier, Martin Erskine, Martin Erskine (programming). Liner Note Author: Bill Rosenfield. Recording information: Hit Factory Sudio 1, New York, NY (01/12/1998-01/14/1998). Photographer: Gerry Goodstein. Used to be, in the world of stage musicals, there were hits and flops. Hits were shows that opened on Broadway and ran long enough to turn a profit; flops were everything else. But that was back in the days when there were a lot of Broadway shows, they didn't cost as much money to produce, and money was easier to raise. Today, things are much more complicated: Shows don't even have to open on Broadway to be successful. The greater risks and opportunities, however, tend to eliminate finality. In a sense, there are no flops anymore, only shows that haven't been sufficiently revised and reproduced enough times to become hits yet. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the songs for Godspell and collaborated with Leonard Bernstein on Mass, returned to religious subject matter with the musical Children of Eden, which ran for only 103 performances in London in 1991, though it produced a cast album. Used to be, that would have meant it was a flop. Instead, Schwartz and librettist John Caird continued to work on the show. For another six years. Then it was staged at the Paper Mill Playhouse, a prominent regional theater in New Jersey, for six weeks in 1997, with a cast including Broadway and recording star Stephanie Mills. It is the cast of this production that has recorded this two-CD set. (There is also a one-CD highlights version.) The hope, of course, is that this will lead to further productions and maybe even to Broadway. Children of Eden is a musical retelling of the Book of Genesis, specifically, creation, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel (Act I), and Noah and the Ark (Act II). Schwartz has experience musicalizing the New Testament, but the Old, while inherently dramatic, is also episodic and more intractable. But then, in a move that may make church productions dicey, Schwartz and Caird have introduced some variations into the stories. Their God often sounds more like a secular father than a holy one: Adam and Eve seem to discover sex before eating the apple; after Eve eats the apple, God tries to persuade Adam to stay in Eden; and Cain discovers "A Ring of Stones" that sounds a lot like Stonehenge and suggests some other god may have staged another creation nearby. For all that, the plot generally follows the Biblical versions, sometimes told in choral parts and sometimes in solo songs that mix traditional theater music with elements of pop/rock, jazz, gospel, ...

| | 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Lynyrd Skynyrd CD (2007) Remastered
Guitar
$6.69 Producers include: Al Kooper, Tom Dowd. Compilation producer: Andy McKaie. Engineers include: Al Kooper. Recorded between 1973 and 1977. Includes liner notes by Joseph Laredo. This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series. Lynyrd Skynyrd: Ed King (guitar, bass instrument); Gary Rossington (guitar); Billy Powell (keyboards); Leon Wilkeson (bass instrument, background vocals); Artimus Pyle (drums, percussion); Robert Burns (drums); Allen Collins, Ronnie Van Zant. This compilation, which compiles pretty much all of the group's best-known material, provides the casual fan an excellent entry point into the work of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the quintessential Southern rock band. While Skynyrd was fully capable of writing anthems for the unreconstructed South (the pro-Nixon, Neil Young-baiting "Sweet Home Alabama"), it often transcended the macho breast-beating of its peers. "Gimme Three Steps," for instance, finds the narrator studiously sidestepping a barroom brawl, while "Saturday Night Special" details a blatantly anti-gun stance, about as common in '70s Southern rock as drum machines and hair spray. Skynyrd's undeniable mastery of Southern boogie is what keeps the whole thing moving. Of course, this collection ends with the ultimate power ballad and bane of cover bands worldwide, "Free Bird"; without this and "Stairway to Heaven," the "classic rock" radio format as we know it might never have existed. Like any record company worth their salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when they see it, and when the millennium came around -- well, the 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection wasn't too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it's hard to feel that way when it's used as another excuse to turn out a budget-line series. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it's impossible for any of these brief collections to be definitive, but they're nevertheless solid samplers that don't feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take Lynyrd Skynyrd's 20th Century volume -- it's an irresistible ten-song summary of their MCA years. There may be a couple of noteworthy songs missing, but many of their best-known songs are here, including "Sweet Home Alabama," "What's Your Name," "Gimme Three Steps," "You Got That Right," "Saturday Night Special," "That Smell," and "Free Bird." Serious fans will want something more extensive, but this is an excellent introduction for neophytes and a great sampler for casual fans, considering its length and price. That doesn't erase the ridiculousness of the series title, but the silliness is excusable when the music and the collections are good. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This compilation, which compiles pretty much all of the group's best-known material, provides the casual fan an excellent entry point into the work of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the quintessential Southern rock band.
