(6 Customer Reviews)
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Mike Keneally (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Ike Willis (vocals, guitar); Eric Buxton, Sting (vocals); Paul Carman (alto saxophone); Albert Wing (tenor saxophone); Kurt McGettrick (baritone saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Scott Thunes (bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). The first live album compiled from various performances on Frank Zappa's 1988 world tour (his final outing), Broadway the Hard Way is composed mostly of new, vocal-oriented material. The tone throughout is highly political, with Zappa taking potshots at such targets as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Pat Robertson and other televangelists, Jesse Jackson, C. Everett Koop, and so on. Despite Zappa's well-deserved reputation as an acute satirist, his sarcasm is often surprisingly humorless here, leaning toward didacticism; his choice to name names and address his subjects explicitly, rather than through metaphor, also renders the album instantly dated, almost like a late-'80s standup comedy routine. Despite these flaws, many of Zappa's political observations hit the mark, as do some of the jokes, easily making Broadway the Hard Way one of his best and most intellectually stimulating post-'60s political efforts. The CD features a memorable guest appearance from Sting, singing his Jimmy Swaggart-condemned Police tune "Murder by Numbers." ~ Steve Huey Recorded on his infamous final world tour of 1988, BROADWAY THE HARD WAY is classic late-period Zappa at his satirical best. In fact, this is one of the best Zappa collections of novelty songs in his huge catalog. Of course, underlying all the buffoonery is one of the greatest assemblages of musicians ever to grace the stage. From long-time Zappa sidemen like Ike Willis, Chad Wackerman and Ed Mann to virtuoso guitarist Mike Keneally, keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Martin and a stellar horn section, this is a group far superior to (and larger than) any that FZ ever took under his baton. From Zappa's booming announcement opening "Elvis Has Just Left The Building," the tone is set for a knee-slapping romp pointing a mocking finger at female corporate executives ("Planet Of The Baritone Women"), the right-wing moral majority ("When The Lie's So Big") and Reagan's Surgeon General ("Promiscuous"). Other standouts include a hilarious poke at Jesse Jackson ("Rhymin' Man") and televangelists ("Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk"). All kidding aside, some truly inspired performances occur in a reading of Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" and Zappa's classic "Outside Now." Sting even makes an appearance on his own composition "Murder by Numbers."Q (8/95, pp.150-151) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "Broadway revue-style comic dissection of the contemporary American cultural and political scene..." | Broadway The Hard Way Music Broadway The Hard Way Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews As great as ever Zappa is one of the most underrated rock guitarists, and there are many moments on this cd that display what I mean. And, don't miss the "duet" with Sting, who tries, unsuccessfully, to be as irreverent as Zappa. Murder By Numbers is nothing like Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk or Jezebel Boy. The cd is worth the price just for Elvis Has Just Left The Building! Submitted by Mike (Minneapolis, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Excellent Frank Zappa's politically charged album about the Republican party is more relevent now that W is president. He predicted the future and it is not good. Submitted by Lloyd (Shreveport) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Viva Zappa This is a great CD! It has all the things Zappa fans love, and has a guest appearance by Sting. I especially liked the jazz number, "Stolen Moments." Submitted by Steve D (Largo, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Broadway The Hard Way
$14.79 Special limited edition packaging with exclusive artwork and a bonus DVD. DVD contains exclusive making of the album in the studio, behind the scenes footage, videos and more. Saosin: Cove Reber (vocals); Beau Burchell, Justin Shekoski (guitar, background vocals); Chris Sorenson (bass guitar); Alex Rodriguez (drums). California's Saosin mixes post-hardcore aggression, alternative rock melody, and dashes of screamo and emo to alight on their soaring, thundering sound. After building up a substantial buzz via constant touring and a well-received EP, Saosin delivers with their self-titled 2006 debut. There's no posing here, rather the power on this album comes from emotional honesty, impassioned performances, and a carefully crafted sonic landscape of layered guitars and a jackhammer rhythm section. SAOSIN is a debut that culls from some of the most appealing elements of the alternative rock and post-hardcore scenes, and consequently makes Saosin a band to watch. The long wait is over. California's Saosin issued their debut EP Translating the Name in 2003. They already had a well-developed fan base for their unique, even enigmatic brand of post-hardcore screamo. The band, having undergone some personnel changes -- most notably singer Anthony Green's departure in 2004 and the enlisting of Cove Reber as his replacement -- also underwent a sonic change on their self-titled 2005 EP. That primer was a guidebook to the band's new sound. Their Capitol debut, produced by Howard Benson, who also plays keyboards and does minimal programming, is a much slicker and far more imaginative outing than the band's underground fans may appreciate. That's not to say it's not impressive. It is. Quite so. This quintet are fine songwriters, excellent musicians, and have actually taken their post-underground hardcore beginnings and turned them into something that may indeed further rock music itself. This is not an idle claim. The songs on this album are tight, finished, and full of unexpected twists and turns, varied dynamics, fine lyrics, and, most of all, they're surprising. The hard twin-guitar sound at the front drives a rhythm section that is always in the pocket. Justin Shekoski and Beau Burchell work symbiotically with one another. They twin riffs and single lines without ever devolving into guitar heroics. They play as a unit. Reber's beautiful high-pitched voice walks the line but never resorts to screaming, because he doesn't ...
