(1 Customer Review)
Rykodisc's Week in Hawaii series is part of the Atmosphere Collection, which presents continuously tracked nature sounds for optimum relaxation and meditation. Volume eight of the series, entitled Midnight Rainshower, features a 60-minute recording of a lush tropical rainstorm captured from under the palms in the Big Island's Kalopa Park Nature Reserve. Interspersed with the falling rain are the sounds of the occasional passing animal, or the chirps and calls of tropical birds. It's all very relaxing and as evocative as the set's misty cover photo. ~ Johnny Loftus

Week In Hawaii: Midnight Rainshower
$8.85 Rykodisc presents one full hour of oceanside ambiance recorded (they say) in Hawaii. One potential problem with sound effects records that consist of continuous water noises is the indeterminate nature of the sounds created by the swooshing, hissing, foaming liquid mass. Fortunately, whoever documented this aural seascape did a good job of capturing the sounds of aquatic birds in addition to the shifting nuances of surging and breaking waves. The tide has a certain audible ...

| | Shastro Mystic Trance CD (1996)
Week In Hawaii: Midnight Rainshower
$12.89 Shanay is a disappointing effort from Shastro. It has all the makings of a fine psycho-acoustic -- even psychoactive -- meditation CD. Shastro has flutes, keyboards, guitars, and percussion at the ready. Instead of going down the ambient road, he forges into smooth jazz -- good smooth jazz. He is a great musician, no doubt. The major weakness here is that it could have been so much more. ~ Jim Brenholts

| | William S Burroughs Spare Ass Annie & Other Tales CD (1993)
Week In Hawaii: Midnight Rainshower
$12.29 Producer Hal Willner, who in the past has produced off-beat tribute albums to the likes of Thelonius Monk, Kurt Weill, and even Disney songwriters, collaborates again here, as on the earlier DEAD MAN'S RADIO, with Beat legend William S. Burroughs. Burroughs' dusty, sandpaper-dry readings from several of his works, including NOVA EXPRESS, are augmented with a combination of hip-hop tracks and found music, such as schmaltzy orchestral pop from the '50s, cheesy synthesizer versions of Bach airs, and Christmas carols.
The (intentional) effect is an aural equivalent of the cut-up writing style Burroughs pioneered. Pick hit: "Did I Ever Tell You About the Man That Taught His Asshole to Talk," a hallucinatory shaggy dog monologue that's one of the highlights of his most famous work, NAKED LUNCH.
Recorded at Hairball 3 Studio and Red House Studio, Lawrence, Kansas; Multron Studios, San Francisco, California.
Engineers: Hall Willner, Brad Murphy, Peter Scatturo.
Personnel: William S. Burroughs (vocals); Zoe Ellis (vocals); Ras I Zulu (spoken vocals); Michael Franti, Charlie Hunter (guitar); Ralph Carney (tenor saxophone); Pete Scaturro ...

| | Michelle Conte Lucky Me! CD (2003)
Week In Hawaii: Midnight Rainshower
$12.89 Michelle Conte, who makes her recording debut on Lucky Me!, has a pleasant voice and swings lightly. Unfortunately she does little else. She tends to sing the first chorus of each song straight, and after some short solos, she returns to sing the last chorus in a similar manner. Another problem with this unadventurous and rather safe release is that the repertoire is dominated by warhorses, mostly songs such as "Lush Life," "Makin' Whoopee," and "Fly Me to the Moon" that certainly did not need to be recorded again, particularly not in yet another forgettable and predictable version. There are some worthwhile solos along the way from guitarist Mark Elf, pianist Allen Farnham, and saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, but otherwise this date is merely routine. Conte needs to develop her own musical personality or at least a fresher repertoire. ~ Scott Yanow
This is Michelle Conte's (jazz guitarist Mark Elf's sister) debut recording. With marvelous intonation and a smooth style, she sings the melody, not around it! Michelle ...
| | Altered Images Destiny The Hits CD (2003) (Import) Germany
Week In Hawaii: Midnight Rainshower
$12.65 Underrated Scottish new wavers quickly moved from the Siouxsie and the Banshees-like goth drone of "Dead Pop Stars" to sunny synth-bubblegum classics like "Happy Birthday," "See Those Eyes," "I Could Be Happy" and "Don't Talk To Me About Love," all powered by Claire Grogan's inimitable squeak of a voice; this 19-track anthology includes extended 12" mixes of five songs.
Destiny is a Japanese release including the most obvious Altered Images singles -- "Dead Popstars," "Happy Birthday," "I Could Be Happy," "Don't Talk to Me About Love" -- along with many other cuts that have popped up on the band's other compilations, with equal emphasis on each of the three studio albums. Two new songs, recorded in 2002, are scattered within the otherwise chronological track order; both are fine, if not worthy of being placed on a disc subtitled The Hits. The excellent expanded ...
