The late great tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons was of the generation of Swing Era players that easily adapted to bop. But though he was a modernist, Ammons maintained that breathy, old-school romantic approach to the tenor. BOSS TENOR, a quintet session from 1960, is one of Ammons's very best albums ever. Ray Barretto's congas subtly add a bit of Latin spice, but otherwise TENOR is a collection of standards rendered with a gorgeous late-night bluesy feel. Accompaniment by Tommy Flanagan, one of the best mainstream pianists ever, certainly doesn't hurt, either. A gem.
The great saxophonist is joined on this masterpiece by Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor & Ray Barretto. (Previously deleted:11/1/05. Original release date:12/3/99)
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 16, 1960. Originally released on Prestige (7180). Includes liner notes by LeRoi Jones.

Bill Evans's second date as a leader was a breakthrough session, firmly establishing him as a highly influential new voice in jazz near the tail end of 1958. His first solo record, 1956's NEW JAZZ CONCEPTIONS, while a respectable effort, was a relatively pallid affair, and left Evans feeling dissatisfied with his playing and "conception" both. Despite Riverside label owner/producer Orrin Keepnews' persistent entreaties, Evans would not return to the studio until he was ready.
"Minority," the Gigi Gryce hard bop original which opens EVERYBODY DIGS.., demonstrates that he was indeed ready, and then ...

That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.
That Ry Cooder, you've ...
| | Petula Clark Classic Collection CDs (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Boss Tenor album
$18.15 CLASSIC COLLECTION contains four CDs of 1960s British pop singer Petula Clark, delving deep into her illustrious career, including huge international hits like "Downtown" and "Don't Sleep in the Subway" to lesser known covers of songs from the Temptations to the Beatles.
Four-CD, 80-song box set of Clark's '60s material contains all of her big U.S. and U.K. hits, numerous singles that were only hits in other countries (usually France), and a bunch of interesting covers, B-sides, and LP tracks, some quite rare. If you're enough of a fan to want more than what you'll find on the usual thorough hits anthology, but not enough of a fan to want everything she ever did, this is perfect. It's got all of the classics, serviceable (although not terribly extensive) liner notes, and a host of interesting items that aren't well-known. These include a 1963 version of "Please Please ...

Boss Tenor music CDs
$13.39 Multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson did not perform with Thad Jones, but was a member of the Mel Lewis Orchestra that carried on after Jones passed away. This CD, comprising a complete program of compositions Jones penned, is a loving and well conceived tribute to the bop trumpeter and progressive big band icon. Robinson plays no less than 14 different instruments, mostly woodwinds, but surprisingly not trumpet, cornet on only one, and flugelhorn on another composition. In his later years, Jones was not as well known for playing the trumpet or cornet that he cut his teeth on, but became one of the most prolific composers in the modern jazz era. Robinson has chosen a few very familiar tunes, and several lesser-known pieces that serve not as filler, but pieces even the jazz-minded public should be more familiar with. In that sense, it's a job very well done. The variation of instrumentations is staggering, but the ...
