| | Bill Evans Sunday At The Village Vanguard CD - Import Bill Evans Discography of CDs
Recorded live at The Village Vanguard, New York, New York on June 25, 1961.
Jazz pianist Bill Evans began a quiet revolution in the early 1960s. Before Evans, jazz piano trios spotlighted the pianist while the others essentially accompanied him or her. Evans envisioned a trio where all three musicians were on an equal footing, where they'd truly interact. SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, recorded live in 1961, captures the original Bill Evans Trio at its peak. Drummer Paul Motian plays with grace, subtlety, and restraint that are equal to Evans's, and bassist Scott LaFaro (who also played with Ornette Coleman) has a rapport with the others that seems telepathic. Evans absorbed the bebop approach to the keys but also took inspiration from the suave pianism of Nat "King" Cole and 20th-century classical Impressionism. SUNDAY is piano trio jazz that's executed so beautifully one might not notice how complex it really is.
Extended resolution CD; one of the first of two albums derived from the legendary final performance of the original Bill Evans Trio, taped during the last day of a Village Vanguard engagement barely 10 days before the tragic death of the trio's bassist,

Bill Evans's second date as a leader was a breakthrough session, firmly establishing him as a highly influential new voice in jazz near the tail end of 1958. His first solo record, 1956's NEW JAZZ CONCEPTIONS, while a respectable effort, was a relatively pallid affair, and left Evans feeling dissatisfied with his playing and "conception" both. Despite Riverside label owner/producer Orrin Keepnews' persistent entreaties, Evans would not return to the studio until he was ready.
"Minority," the Gigi Gryce hard bop original which opens EVERYBODY DIGS.., demonstrates that he was indeed ready, and then some. Anyone who thinks of Evans as a neo-impressionist will be startled by the pianist's hard driving swing here, propelled by the ace Miles Davis rhythm section ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Sunday At The Village Vanguard CD music
$38.49 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Sunday At The Village Vanguard music CDs
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of the country charts. Of course, without Poco, country music wouldn't have taken on the rock trappings that it did in the '80s and '90s. As it was, the band was considered too country for the Top 40 rock format of the time, and too ...
| | Eric Clapton Crossroads 2: Live In The Seventies CDs (1996)
Sunday At The Village Vanguard songs
$38.99 Recorded in the U.S. and the U.K. between May 1974 and December 28, 1978. Includes liner notes by John McDermott
Chock-full of blistering live performances drawn exclusively from the Tulsa-based band Clapton used during the "me" decade, CROSSROADS 2 is the antidote to his mostly laid-back, sleepy studio performances of the era.
With nearly 5 hours of music spread over 4 discs, CROSSROADS 2 never becomes redundant or too much of a good thing--a true testament to the power and fury of Clapton's excellent songs and fiery verve. Smoky vocals and truly inspired guitar workouts serve both his well-known hits and the sometimes obscure blues-songs he chooses. A 24-minute medley duet with Carlos Santana from '75 burns with passion and excitement. The album is bookended with 4 studio outtakes, with 1974's "Walkin' Down The Road" and "Cryin"--recorded four years later with the nucleus of Slowhand's next band--reflecting a more contemplative mood. A terrific set that entertains, surprises and delights, ...
| | Doors Legacy: The Absolute Best CDs (1967)
Sunday At The Village Vanguard album
$19.79 Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd.
Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch ...
