This 1987 outing found the band in fine form with its usual mix of strong originals and choice covers. Estrin's harp work on "Poor Tarzan" shows him to be a blower of chops equal to shining guitar whiz Charlie Baty's mercurial flights. Baty, as usual, struts vintage approved tones and blows hotter than a flamethrower on "Suicide Blues," and sprays Magic Sam licks all over Bobby Guitar's "When Girls Do It." Another solid entry in this band's discography. ~ Cub Koda Little Charlie & The Nightcats All The Way Crazy Songs All The Way Crazy Review

$17.75 Silent for much of the '90s, Huey Lewis & The News re-emerged in 2001 with PLAN B, their first album in seven years. Ignoring the prevailing rap-rock and bubblegum trends of the times, this Frisco outfit whipped up a batch of tunes that sound like contemporary outtakes from a late '60s Stax/Volt session. Songs like "Let Her Go And Start Over," "Rhythm Ranch," and "My Other Woman" all benefit from Lewis's warm and raspy delivery, punchy horn arrangements and ringing harmonies. Guitarists Johnny Colla and Chris Hayes also pump up PLAN B with plenty of fat bluesy riffs that resonate on cuts like "I Never Think About You" and the rollicking title track.
Highlights abound, whether it's an infectious party anthem ("We're Not Here For A Long Time [We're Here For A Good Time]") or a slow-burn duet with country star Wynonna ("I'm Not In Love Yet"). Huey and the boys even tip their collective hat to old pal Nick Lowe (who convinced them to come over to the UK and get in on the pub-rock boom when they were still known as Clover) by executing a snappy version of "When I Write The Book" smothered in organ.
Most artists who show up on Behind the Music have a tragic tale to tell, whether it's drug addiction, the death of a loved one, or a bitter falling out between longtime bandmates. Not Huey Lewis & the News -- the one time they faced tragedy is when they thought Ray Parker, Jr. ripped off "I Want a New Drug" for his theme to Ghostbusters. Apart from that, everything's been pretty great, because they're a bar band (if they'd been from England, you'd call 'em pub rock) that made good and they've always been grateful for their success. When the hits stopped coming sometime during the first Bush administration, they graciously stepped back from the spotlight; during the '90s, they only released one new album, and that was just a covers record. Ten years later, they finally reemerged with Plan B, a record of original material (barring a cover of one of Nick Lowe's best songs, "When I Write the Book") that helped showcase their new, expanded ...
