Neal is one of the most impressive young blues artists on the scene today -- a fact borne out by the contents of this collection. Ably backed by a band that includes his brother Noel on bass and keyboardist Lucky Peterson, Neal indulges in a couple of covers this time, but the majority of the disc is original and incendiary. ~ Bill DahlJazzTimes (4/95, p.83) - "...a tight four-piece ensemble...frames [Neal's] soulful vocals and wailing guitar and harmonica....While Neal's unit has a modern, polished sound, it's far from sterile. His crying Tele-squeezed phrases...ring with an honesty that's as real as anything from the past..." Living Blues (11-12/94, pp.67-68) - "...When Neal proudly proclaims he's Carrying The Torch for the genre's tradition, believe him--but be aware he's propelling it into new, exciting directions as well....another standout entry in Kenny Neal's remarkably consistent discography..." Hoodoo Moon
$9.29 Personnel: Nicholas Payton (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, bass, drum); Tim Warfield (soprano & tenor saxophone); Kevin Hays (vocals, recorder, keyboards, piano); Vincente Archer (bass); Adonis Rose (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion); Karriem Riggins (samples). Recorded at Right Track Studios, New York, New York. SONIC TRANCE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Changing labels from Verve to Warner Bros. and dropping any connection to his neo-bop past, trumpeter Nicholas Payton has crafted a funk-jazz album that unabashedly resurrects iconic trumpeter Miles Davis' wah-wah-laden fusion experiments epitomized by his 1969 opus, Bitches Brew. More slavish to the period than trumpeter Wallace Roney's No Room for Argument, but no less hip-hop-influenced than trumpeter Roy Hargrove's Hard Groove, Sonic Trance is nonetheless far from your average major-label jazz release. Featuring saxophonist Tim Warfield, pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Adonis Rose, and percussionist Daniel Sadownick, the group gains much au courant hip-hop aestheticism from the addition of drummer/producer extraordinaire Karriem Riggins. Besides performing with such heavy hitters as bassist Ray Brown and pianist Mulgrew Miller, the Detroit native has cut out a crossover niche for himself programming ...

| | Larry Taylor Blues and Soul Ban They Were In This House CD (2004)
Hoodoo Moon
$14.29 If you're going to have a career in music, it's important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Being great at one thing doesn't automatically mean a person is great (or even competent) at another; the history of music is full of excellent guitarists, bassists, drummers, and horn players who turned out to be mediocre or lousy vocalists when -- for whatever reason -- they decided to take up singing. But Larry Taylor has no problem making the transition from drummer to singer on They Were in This House, the Chicago blues/soul veteran's first album as a leader. Taylor, who was 48 when this release came out in 2004, is no newcomer; he has been around the Windy City blues scene a long time and has played the drums for a long list of blues heavyweights over the years. But as a recording artist/singer, he was a late bloomer -- and while Taylor doesn't have a huge vocal range, he is an expressive, convincing vocalist who has no problem getting his emotional points across on either hardcore electric Chicago blues or hardcore soul. Taylor handles himself pleasingly well on blues items like Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor," Elmore James' "Knocking at Your Door," and Jimmy Reed's "Signals of Love" as well as on two songs that are associated with the late soul man Johnnie Taylor: "Jody Got Your Girl and Gone" and "Last $2." They Were in This House (which Larry Taylor produced with his manager Bonni McKeown, aka Barrelhouse Bonni) isn't groundbreaking -- no one will accuse Taylor of being innovative -- but it's a solid, enjoyable demonstration of the fact that the Chicagoan made a wise decision when he decided to start recording as a singer. ~ Alex Henderson
