Straight Up! is a typically rollicking, humorous collection of updated Chicago blues from Little Charlie & the Nightcats. As with any of the of the band's albums, the quality of the material is slightly uneven, but the band's good-natured energy makes those shortcomings somewhat forgivable, especially if you are already a fan. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Unlike their previous efforts (where it sounded like the band pulled the van up to the studio, unloaded their gear, and played a set and split before someone hollered out for last call), this one sounds more like a real album. With Joe Louis Walker producing, the boys explore new twists on their wide-ranging bag of tricks. The band's humor is found in abundance on sleazy blues ...

| | Texas Alexander Texas Blues CDs (2001)
Straight Up! music CDs
$14.69 One of the better collections of material recorded prior to the second World War in Texas, the Catfish double-CD Texas Blues challenges the listener to examine many facets of the giant state's sprawling music scene. The presentation of a selection such as this goes a long way to counteract previous divisions that have been made between the country blues of famous players such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander and the multi-faceted worlds of string bands and jug bands, often the outcome of a kind of racist reordering of musical directions. Cities such as Dallas were full of many types of performers in the '20s and '30s, the influence of both traditional blues and the strains of urban Tin Pan Alley and jazz styles striking far and wide like heat lightning on a summer evening. It is the diversity of the program that inevitably provides its greatest value. Most often choosing a pair of tracks by each artist to provide a generous taste, the producers present the listener with the expected superb blues guitar and barrelhouse piano soloists as well as strikingly unique ensembles such as the Dallas Jamboree Jug Band, led by singer and guitarist Carl Davis, and the equally effective Frenchies' String Band. There ...

Straight Up! songs
$25.59 This 1981 album by the funk/soul ensemble Earth, Wind & Fire includes "My Love" and "Kalimba Tree."
The end was near for Earth, Wind & Fire. Raise! wasn't quite the disaster it was made out to be at the time, but it was their least distinguished overall album since the early days on Warner Bros., with the exception of their participation in the awful Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film soundtrack in 1978. "Let's Groove" was just a recycled mid-tempo tune from the mid-'70s, and everything else sounded desultory and uninspired. It was no surprise that after two more albums Maurice White and Company decided to take some ...
