$10.15 Saxophonist Shirantha Beddage makes an impressive debut as a leader and composer with this excellent outing. Primarily a baritonist, who also doubles on tenor and soprano, Beddage surprisingly chooses the bigger horn for his tribute to two greats of the tenor, Stanley Turrentine and John Coltrane, in the powerful "Turrentrane." Beddage switches to soprano for the infectious African-flavored "Danushka's Dance," while overdubbing a bit of tenor to provide a second voice. Pianist Michael Stryker opens the lovely ballad "As the Flower Grows" with a lush solo, with the song changing to a bossa nova as the baritonist and rhythm section enter. The complex bop vehicle "Nightly News" is actually a salute to alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, with bassist Ryan Kotler providing an inventive line underneath the leader's majestic baritone solo. The heartfelt "I'll Be Gone" is Beddage's tenor feature, a warm remembrance of jazz pianist and longtime jazz educator James Williams, who passed away unexpectedly in 2004. Drummer Jared Schonig also provides capable support throughout this promising first recording by Shirantha Beddage. ~ Ken Dryden
We All Live in the World is the collaborative effort of husband and wife team, Bob Brookens and Colleen Ovelman, as well as a host of highly talented friends. Colleen is a freelance writer who spends most of her time taking care of her three children and assisting Bob with the Kids Creating Music classes that they created. Colleen wrote most of the lyrics on the album. This gave the songs their original shape. Then Bob, the musician of the pair, composed the music and produced the album. Bob is an extremely versatile musician, playing guitar, cello, saxophone, drums, piano, clarinet, and more on the album. Bob has been performing professionally for 20 years. As a performer, he has played music from genres across the board: folk, hip-hop, reggae, jazz, funk and straight up fifties rock, as Chubby Checker’s saxophonist. Bob currently performs professionally with two local bands, and this past summer his reggae band, the Irie Warriors, opened up for Jimmy Buffet at the Tweeter Center. The Bob's hip-hop band, Diatribe, opened up for saxophonist Karl Densen, as well. Bob also teaches music, works as a music therapist, and created and facilitated Kids Creating Music classes with his wife, Colleen, for the past four years. The mission of the children's album is to familiarize children with many genres of music, while entertaining them and their parents. The title track, We All Live in the World, which is complemented by the sounds of Middle Eastern music, embodies the essence of the album. Like That is a hip-hop song featuring a local MC, which brings contemporary music to young ears in a fun, authentic way. Vroom, Vroom is produced in the style of a gospel chorus, while If I Had a Wallaby might well be the only Klezmer song about an Australian bush animal, but it is a rollicking good time. This is Colleen and Bob’s first musical collaboration. Their other collaboration is a family, which includes Eli, Maya, and Xavier, the inspirations for the album. You can check out the other bands Bob plays with to hear music and find out about upcoming live shows at: www.myspace.com/thesermonband, ...
