In 1979, as China reopened its doors to the west, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. While in China, Stern performed concerts and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This classic documentary records this extraordinary cultural exchange. Stern and David Golub, the pianist who accompanied him, narrate part of the film, while Tan Shuzhen, a deputy director of the Chinese Conservatory of Music, provides a different and complementary perspective on Chinese culture. In addition to the reissue of the acclaimed documentary which captured this significant event (and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary while doing it,) this video also contains the newer film MUSICAL ENCOUNTERS. This tracks Stern as he returns to China, twenty years later, and catches up with his old students, many of whom are masterful musicians in their own right.

This album is a special edition for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. It has a song called "Night Lights of Shanghai Expo", which is down to the earth a Shanghai melody that the composer absorbed from Shanghai Opera - "Hu Ju" and transfer the rhythm from 2/4 to a 6/8 Waltz. That song plus "Welcome Song", "Suzhou - Eastern Venice" and "Bon Voyage" will remain a good memory by visitors of Shanghai Expo who come from the world. This album is also dedicated to Catherine Gao for her beautiful verse - "Love Forever". That poem is a good blessing to all weddings. Few lines are quoted here: "Dare no waves! Dare no winds! The true love must last long. Though seas may dry and rocks may decay, we always keep our vow. --- May we love forever!" The verse was rehearsed by the poet with her soft voice in Mandarin (partly shown in one clip of preview) and by Raymond Gao in English. Some other tracks were gold songs either selected from Johnson Gao's 5 music CDs (http://cdbaby /all/huanying) or newly composed such that "Song of Elite Youth".
